Yet again, kind neighbors gave me some yuzu citrus fruits from the tree in their garden. Now I am looking forward to enjoying the bath on the night of the winter solstice. Tanka here is my favorite among all my own haikus and tankas.

The phrase that symbolizes this time of year is this, “Trout migrates upstream in dense”. I simply have no knowledge about trout biology. I have only seen how the fish swim up the rivers on TV or some other sources.

A story has been passed down that goes the residents in the old capital of Japan got very excited at even a little amount of snowfall because the area has relatively little snowfall for the very low temperature in winter. I don’t enjoy a gracious living like a person of noble birth, still, I get very happy when it snows.

The other day, I sent a number of postcards with my calligraphy, “friendship” on them to my very good friend, a very devoted teacher in Poland. I asked her to use the postcards as gifts for the season and show them something foreign to them. For, I thought, seeing the cards, some of them would develop interests in Japan and Japanese style calligraphy. Now, I am very glad to see those cards reached her and her students look pleased with them.

I love to watch the clouds in the sky. At times, I do that for a pretty long time without noticing my doing so.

Masks are just what I wanted right now and, moreover, they look so stylish! In the envelope I found other cute, delightful things and a card. Supreme winter gifts! I have no idea how to express my happiness of receiving the presents.

Through my calligraphic activities, I got a precious acquaintance with a paperer.
As I have practiced calligraphy since childhood, “paperers” means to me a group of very special people. From them, I got great assistance that words cannot express on the occasion of my first solo exhibition at the beginning of 2009 and three group exhibitions that followed it.
And I have always been keen to know what their essential works be.
And so, I was extremely happy when they let me visit her house and witness the place and their trade and business directly.
Moreover, I found out that she is not only a good artisan but a fantastic artist herself. The admirable artisanship and art that she creates are the result of her long-standing efforts.
This “continuation” was none other than her request. I put it on the beautiful frame I got at her place.

This is the seasonal phrase for this time of year that means “Bears hide inside a cave to hibernate”. I remember visiting the natal home of my grandfather on my father’s side, where I saw neighbors hunted wild boars and wild deer. Now I wonder if wild bears also inhabited there.
