Late summer’s waves/

Power of the setting sun/

Still lingers on/

Am I right to understand that “doyō-nami” refers to the big, powerful waves in the ocean around this time of year?  I thought this haiku expresses the power of the ocean waves that are still crashing onto the shore even though summer is drawing to a close.

土用波というのは、今頃の海の大きな波のことでしょうか。夏も終わりに近づくけれども、まだまだ大きく、力強い波が海辺に打ち寄せている、ということかなと思いました。

〜Power of words　お気に入りキャラクター〜

Words are not merely tools for conveying meaning but are vessels that carry the soul.

They have the power to connect hearts with people far away, and the power to convey feelings across the ages.＞

Although I feel like writing what is above, my current favorite character in Disney movies doesn’t speak human languages.  All he says is things like “Pooh-wah!” or “P’too!”, and whatnot.

〜Scorching heat　暑さにも飽きてしまいました〜

With this intense heat continuing day after day, I have grown sort of tired of the heat.  I hear it is often said that in summer, clouds of various shapes and sizes appear one after another, but I just can’t bring myself to feel that poetic.

〜How small our struggles truly are.　荘子から〜

“A quarrel on a snail’s horn”

I found this phrase in “A Dictionary of Proverbs for Conversation”.  It is derived from the Chinese classic “Zhuangzi”, and is said to come from a fable about “two countries located on the left and right horns of a snail that are fighting over territory.”  The phrase is meant to convey that even issues people consider major and fight over are, from a cosmic perspective, insignificant.  I am not quite sure whether that is a large or small scale of thought.

＜蝸牛角上争何事＞

「会話で使える諺辞典」に出てきました。中国の古典、荘子に由来する言葉で、「かたつむりの左右の角の上にある二つの国が、領土争いをしている」という寓話から、人間が大きな問題だと思って争っていることも、宇宙的な視点から見れば取るに足らないことだという意味を表しているそうです。スケールが大きいのか、小さいのかよく分かりません。

This haiku seems to suggest that while life is fleeting, that is precisely why this very moment is beautiful.

In other words, even if a person achieves something, it will not last forever.  However, I think the verse is saying that this does not make life merely hollow, but it is also beautiful

＜人の世は花火のような夢ばかり＞

この句は、人生は儚いけれど、だからこそ、今のこの一瞬が美しいと言っているようにも思われます。

つまり、人が何かを手に入れても、それはいつまでも続くものではない。けれども、それだけに虚しいだけではなくて、美しいものだということを言っているのではないかと思うのです。

No matter what style it is written in, I love the character for “flower.”

“The flower smiles” is synonymous with “the flower blooms,” and the idea that a flower blooms “without mind” is apparently a Zen saying meaning the flower simply blooms without thinking about anything

どの書体であっても、「花」という字が好きです。

「花が笑う」は、「花が咲く」と同義で、花は無心だというのは、花は何も考えずにただ咲いているという禅語らしいです。

〜Cicada chorus haiku　魂の遊び〜

“Chorus of cicadas” is a seasonal word for summer in haiku society.  The phrase describes the chorus of cicadas that seems to pour down from the trees.  For Japanese people, it is a quintessential summer sound, but I have heard that people from abroad often find it difficult to relate to that sensation.

My soul at play/
Amid the cascading chorus of cicadas/
Like violent rain falling all around/

〜Intense shower haiku　三角や四角〜

The cityscape of artificial buildings symbolized with words such as triangles and squares, and a sudden, intense downpour so heavy that it makes the world appear totally white.  I found this was another haiku that shows an interesting contrast.

Triangles and squares/

City’s rooftops and windows/

Then without warning began an intense downpour/

「街並の三角四角白雨来る」

三角や四角といった直線的な建物が象徴する人工的な街並みと、突然に世界が白く見えるほどの急で激しいにわか雨。これも面白い対比の俳句だと思いました。
