I have been practicing calligraphy since I was a small child under a renowned calligrapher and his wife who are no longer with us. I now feel a strong desire to share this amazing art and culture with the world. The character written in dark ink is the modern kanji character for “star” commonly used today, while the one written in light ink in the background is its ancient form. The old form may be too faint for you to make out clearly, though. When I first saw this ancient form of the character, it looked more like an “alien” than a “star” to me. As I am used to it now, I quite instantly think, “Ah, that’s the character for ‘star.’”

濃い墨で書いたのが、今一般に使われている「星」という字で、背景に薄墨で書いたのが、それの古代文字です。薄過ぎて、よく分からないかもしれませんが、初めて古い形のこの字を見たときには、「星」というより、「宇宙人」みたいと思ったものですが、今では見慣れているので、即座に「ああ、『星』だな」と思えます。

This is a result of my copying practice of a piece by my teacher’s wife, who was herself a great calligrapher. And she created this piece, which is from the latter part of the “Iroha” poem, in the very final years of her life. As is well known, the “Iroha” poem seems open to a variety of interpretations, and this particular passage can be read as either “Life as a whole was a fleeting dream”, “I will no longer dream,” or in other ways. To me, as she was such an amazing woman who I look up to, I am very intrigued to know what was on her mind when she chose and wrote this passage.

これは、ご自身も書家であった我が師の奥さまの書を私が臨書したもので、いろは歌の終わりの方の一節です。もう最晩年に書かれたのですが、よく知られているように、いろは歌というのはいろいろの解釈が出来るようです。この一説も、『人生全体が儚い夢だった』とも『もう夢を見ることはない』とも、また別の解釈も可能なようです。私にとって、本当に素晴らしい憧れの女性だったので、どのような思いで、この一節を選んで書かれたのか、とても興味深いのです。
