Somehow my late mother loved the event of Halloween. I wonder if she found those pumpkin decorations cute.

The seasonal phrase for this time of year is “it drizzles from time to time”. We may be going into this kind of season especially in mountainous areas.

I practiced with the old models my first teacher gave me years ago yet again. It makes me feel nostalgic and warm inside. How fortunate I have always been since birth!

I found a modern haiku about silver grass and I thought it would make a beautiful post. So, I went to a place where I find beautiful “waves” of windblown silver grasses every fall. However, somehow the scene wasn’t as beautiful as I had expected.

I wrote「輝」on a normal kind of paper for calligraphy the other day. This postcard has the same letter and what you find beside it are my new business card and another card with translation of the character. I always submit this set for a postcard collection to be displayed and sold.

The seasonal phrase for this time of year is this and apparently, it means “first frost of year”. However, “frost” still seems a little unrealistic to me. We have been exposed to sudden chillness these several days in Kyoto, though.

Nowadays from time to time, you find some calligraphic works that are stylish but just superficial-looking. In the meantime, I have always been trying to pursue something genuine, that is, genuine calligraphy supported by its long history and tradition. Someone that made me realize this once again said something more to me, “You should do both, because you are capable of doing both.”

I practiced copying the calligraphy by my first teacher’s wife. She had always won my ultimate respect. Years ago, after the practice session, quite suddenly she said to me, “Don’t be angry at idiots. You must not let those idiots disturb you.” Then she went on, “If you have time for that, use the time to read good books and talk with good friends who will enhance you as a person.” How astonished I was then! “Why does she know?” In those days I sure had been indignant at my workplace and the people there. However, I had never mentioned that at the calligraphy school. That was NOT because I thought as a student it was not desirable for me to talk with the teacher and his wife something of the sort, BUT simply because I had never thought of doing that. There certainly are some people who don’t understand me in the least, even though they actually see me often. As for her, she only met me a couple of times a month and I never said anything meaningful and significant. Now, you see why she had been and will be forever winning my greatest respect.

I have received a number of responses to my request to my readers to tell me their favorite characters or words. This time it is “brilliancy” or “splendor”. I guess everyone wants to lead a life full of brilliance.

The other day, I wrote a number of “Friendship” on postcards to send to my friend abroad who is an experienced teacher. This is another “Friendship” in a different style.
