As it is getting warmer, I expect small insects such as butterflies will be around soon. This work is a copying practice of my teacher. It has an interesting haiku about something very big and something very small; that is, a hanging temple bell and a butterfly settling and sleeping on it.

“Gratefulness. Gratitude. Thankfulness.” To my great regret, this is not my original calligraphy but copying of my teacher’s. I thought I must practice it hard in order to be able to write it right away when necessary.

My seniors in the calligraphy society tell me not to keep on relying too much on the teacher’s calligraphy. However, it brings me a great sense of ease to practice copying his calligraphy.

I thought I would try copying practice of one of the numerous works my teacher left. However, I only lost my nerve for I it because of the dynamism of both his lines and his words. I just can’t create lines just as dynamic as his.

I often practice copying the works that my teacher left. I enjoy copying his Chinese character pieces, however, copying works in small kana letters is really very hard and I am seldom successful to produce something passable.

I practiced copying the calligraphy by my first teacher’s wife. She had always won my ultimate respect. Years ago, after the practice session, quite suddenly she said to me, “Don’t be angry at idiots. You must not let those idiots disturb you.” Then she went on, “If you have time for that, use the time to read good books and talk with good friends who will enhance you as a person.” How astonished I was then! “Why does she know?” In those days I sure had been indignant at my workplace and the people there. However, I had never mentioned that at the calligraphy school. That was NOT because I thought as a student it was not desirable for me to talk with the teacher and his wife something of the sort, BUT simply because I had never thought of doing that. There certainly are some people who don’t understand me in the least, even though they actually see me often. As for her, she only met me a couple of times a month and I never said anything meaningful and significant. Now, you see why she had been and will be forever winning my greatest respect.

“Kindness beautifies the world of flesh”. This is not my original work. Again, I copied one page from the book of models I inherited from my teacher. For, I thought this one is a good, strong comment.
We haven’t enjoyed calligraphy lessons in our usual classrooms since February last year. My present teacher told us her students that we should learn calligraphy copying especially at times like this. However, I just can’t stop myself turning to my first teacher’s calligraphy that has been so familiar to me since my early childhood rather than the classics respected by all the calligraphy learners of all ages and cultures.
I practiced copying my teacher’s work. This time, I tried very hard to copy each letter, however, I changed the arrangement. “Something of beauty is an everlasting delight.”
