〜“Smile”, once again　3度目の「笑」〜

When I was organizing data of my past calligraphy works, this letter “笑, smile or laugh” caught my attention once again.  And I realized once again how I myself love this character. However, only the latest one out of the three that I uploaded here remains with me.  I know I should feel happy to see my works to go and belong to others, though.

昔の作品のデータを整理していたらまたこの字が気になりました。私自身がよほど「笑」という字が好きなのだと思いました。けれども、ここに掲示した3点のうち最新のものしか手元には残っていません。作品が誰かにもらわれていくのはいいことだと解ってはいるのですが。

〜Add and increase　この字が好き〜

A friend of mine said she likes this “加” or “to add”.  According to this young woman she likes it because it has a positive image of adding, increasing and making something good and favorable larger and larger.

As I wanted a little twist to the work, I wrote the letter both in present day form and old form.

加えていって、増えていくポジティブなイメージが好き、いい事がどんどん増えて大きくなるからと、この字が好きだと言った若い女性の友人がいたので書きました。

ちょっとひねりが欲しい気がしましたので、今の字と古い字の組み合わせにしました。

〜Beautiful image　渚と水鳥〜

Following someone’s request who loves the letter “渚or edge of water” I wrote this one.  Then later I found this phrase that means “the edge of water and birds (crane and duck, to be specific)”.  I found the term’s image very beautiful.

〜Favorite letter　ロマンティックな〜

I wrote this letter “渚” or “beach” because I heard it was someone’s favorite.  As a matter of fact, it is a lovely letter that blows up your romantic images.  And I was well persuaded why she loves it.

〜Favorite letter　 2種類〜

I wrote the letter “織” or to weave, a letter from the name of an acquaintance <https://itooto.tumblr.com>and her favorite one, as well.  However, because I didn’t know what kind of touch she likes, I tried two kinds.

〜Fun, fun, fans!　 好きな字が次々と〜

I tried to clean up my house before, and now I am tidying my computer.  Then I found these photos of paper fans, which I remember I left as thank-you’s at a Buddhist temple that I was very fortunate to be allowed to use as a venue of the group exhibition held in July, 2015.  It is really enjoyable to see those characters I myself love.

〜What is most valued at present　穏やかさ〜

Just as I did many times, I asked someone for his favorite character of word, and he suggested “tranquility”.

Following is the reason he mentioned; when young he had completely no respect to a quiet, commonplace life, which at the moment, he values very much.

〜Requested Chinese character お前が消えて喜ぶ者に〜

In response to my request for a favorite character or word, a friend of mine suggested 櫂 or “oar”.  She likes this character so much, she employed it for the name of her first grandchild.  Honestly at first, I didn’t know why a part of a boat is so important.  After thinking about it for a while, I realized it is “oar” that indicates the rower’s mind.  Which direction to go.  How fast it should be moving.  All of these are determined by the movement of the “oar”.

お好きな字や言葉を教えてくださいとのお願いに、ある友人が「櫂」を挙げてくれました。彼女はこの字が好きで初孫ちゃんのお名前にしているぐらいです。正直なところ、私は初めどういうことか解りませんでした。ボートの一部分がなんで重要なのでしょう？　と考えましたが、つまり、この一部分というのは、ボートを漕いでいる人の主体性そのものなのですね。どちらに向かうか、どのぐらいの速度で進むか。櫂を操る人の意志の表現なのですね。
