〜Passage from an old poem　もう夏だ！〜

Even though it is still the last day of May, utterly hot it is!

“If it is this hot even in May, what would happen when December comes?” is a common story in 漫才 or Japanese stand-up comedy performed usually by two people.

The photo shows one passage from an ancient Chinese poem depicting a hot summer day; it roughly says waking up from a nap lying on the ground in shade, the poet found the sun right above him and heard a singing of a bush warbler.

まだ5月の末だというのに、真夏の暑さ。

5月で既にこの暑さだったら、12月になったらどうなるのかしら？　というのはよくある漫才ネタ。

写真は、真夏のお昼間に木陰の地べたで昼寝をしていて、夢から覚めたら太陽は真上にあって、鶯が一声鳴いたという詩の一節です。

〜Charming myth　カンパニュラの花〜

White and purple campanula mediums in the neighbor’s garden are in full bloom now.

I took a little look at this kind of the plant and found this lovely Greek myth.

“A beautiful nymph called Campanula was a keeper of the orchard in Olympus.

One day, as a soldier intruded into the orchard, Campanula called for help by ringing a silver bell.  But she was bereaved by the soldier.

And the story goes on: the goddess of flowers, Flora lamented her passing and changed her into a bell-shaped flower.

〜Something to control your life　ハガキ作品その2〜

The letter is “櫂” or “oar”.  

This is meant to be shown at the postcard collection exhibition just like the last one.  And this letter was suggested by a very long-time friend of mine.  It means just a part of a boat but it must be a very important part because it controls where you are headed for.

「櫂」です。

〜Difficult poem to interpret　鳥の数〜

A friend of mine told me her favorite poem when I asked for a favorite word or a character.  The poem is so dense I just don’t know how to mention it here.  Roughly, it is about singing and silence of one bird or two.

〜Buddhist philosophy　施しを与えること〜

“耳施”.  I found this phrase on a signboard of a Buddhist temple.  Those signboards at temples often show instructive and educational aphorisms for the people.  This one apparently means “alms by the ears”, in other words “we should do good to others by listening empathetically what others have to say”.  

However, I instantly had an idea when I read this comment that this philosophy does good to the “listeners” rather than the “speakers”. 

For, I have seen so many people who obviously suffer from substantial disadvantages by NOT listening to others. 

I must look sharp myself.

「耳施」。これはあるお寺で見つけた掲示板の言葉です。説明には「他の人の話は親身になって聞きましょう」といったことが書いてありました。なるほど、「耳」による施し。けれども、これは施される人よりも、施す人の方に恵みがあるように思いました。

これまでにも他の人の話をしっかり聞かないために、不利益を被っている人を数多く見ました。

気をつけよう。

〜Solar term and a haiku　紅花〜

I chose a solar term for five days starting today, “紅花栄”, or safflowers bloom in profusion for my calligraphic work.  Interestingly enough, “紅花” or literally “scarlet flower” is the name of my important friend.  I haven’t had a chance to meet her for a long time unfortunately, though.

How I wish her life be full of good luck and every success in her business!

Here, I also wrote a modern haiku about the flower.

〜Contemporary haiku and an ancient Chinese poem　初夏の頃〜

We have already been in the season of Xiaoman for about four days now.  Thus, I wrote a modern haiku and a passage from an old Chinese poem about this time of year.

And like the haiku mentions, a few of my good friends’ birthdays come this season.

〜Amusing Chinese character　鬼だ！〜

I often ask people around me for their favorite character or word for my calligraphic activity.  This time, I asked this question to my long-time friend from high school days.

And she gave me this very interesting looking character “槐” or “sophora”, a kind of plants, that can be divided to two parts, “tree” and “ogre”.

Please enjoy some photos I took at the Kyoto Botanical Gardens, as well as my work.

Incidentally, its flower languages are “welfare” and “refinement”, as the plant is regarded as a sign of auspiciousness.

何しろ、「木偏に鬼」で槐（エンジュ）！

京都の植物園で撮った写真と一緒にご覧ください。

縁起のいい木とされているらしく、花言葉は「幸福」や「上品」です。

〜Powerful flowing of abundant energy  ハガキ作品に〜

I like the Chinese character “漲” that means overflowing, overflowing of energy, enthusiasm, can-do spirit and what not.  So, I looked for a phrase with this letter and found this one “漲溢”.

The image is the desire for expression being accumulated, cherishingly piled up and again newly produced; then finally begin powerfully overflowing.

I am thinking how I could make it into a postcard work as the “瑞祥”.

漲るという字が好きなので、これが含まれる熟語を探してみました。それで、「漲溢」です。

積み重ねて、大事に溜めて、また生み出して、満杯になった表現欲求が力強く溢れ出るイメージです。

先日の「瑞祥」と同じようにハガキ作品に落とし込もうと考えているところです。
