This was an assignment from a lesson quite a while ago.  Its subject, apparently, is a poem by Takeda Shingen, a feudal warlord, which describes a change of seasons from spring to summer.  They say that back then, all warlords were skilled at writing Chinese poetry.

I learned that this is the first part of a poem by Yuan Zhen, a poet, scholar, and statesman of the mid-Tang Dynasty in China.  The poem praises tea as a fragrant, delicious beverage beloved by many, including poets and monks.  I know I must practice and write the entire poem at some point.

I went near my alma mater to run a quick errand, so I walked through the campus on my way back.  It had been quite a while.  The plum blossoms were in full bloom.  My calligraphy here is an ancient Chinese poem about the blossoms.

In the bitter cold the other day, I heard the pond in my friend’s garden had frozen over.

This poem apparently contrasts the warm eastern side, where the pond ice melts, with the blossoms on the plum tree on the cold northern side that would not open.

先日の寒さの中、友人のお宅のお庭の池が凍ったようです。

この詩は、東側は暖かくて池の氷も解けるけれど、梅の木の北側は寒くて花が開かないという対比を表現しているようです。

Apparently, it is a poem about feeling cold at night while sleeping, only to find it had been snowing.  At the end, it mentions the sound of bamboo cracking, but I am not sure what kind of sound that is.  The snow scene images were taken during heavy snowfall two or three days ago.
