〜May tendresse should illuminate the world　大切なこと〜

My first calligraphy teacher’s wife who was a great calligrapher herself is the one I admire the most all my life.  I learned later that this phrase 慈照 is used as a part in her posthumous honorific name, I believe it means something like “the heart full of tendresse that illuminates the world”.

〜Poems on spring　短冊３枚〜

〜Pleasant wind こういう心持ちは私にはなかなか・・・〜

I learned the phrase roughly means “pleasant breeze that blows in the sunlight and the moon in the fair sky”, in other words, “having a pure heart, no grudge and only refreshing feeling”, which indicates, I am afraid a state of mind that I would not be able to reach.

光風霽月。ざっくり言うと、「日の光の中を吹きわたるさわやかな風と、晴れた空に浮かぶ月」という意味で、言い換えると「心が澄んで、何のわだかまりもなく、爽快である」ということだそうです。私はそんな心境にはなれそうになくて。

〜Spring gale　何かが変りそう〜

Since we are enjoying a pleasant weather this morning, there seems a sense of a warm day ahead in the air.  These past two days or so, it was very windy, and moreover, the air was so cold I don’t think the wind was the “first gale of spring” as a meteorological term.  Here is a modern haiku on the spring gale, though.

今朝は天気が良くて、ようやくお昼間には暖かくなるかなという予感があります。昨日まで二日間ほどは風が強くて、しかも冷たい風だったので、気象用語の「春一番」には当たらないかと思います。けれども、ここでは春一番を詠んだ現代俳句です。

〜Delightful gifts  焼き菓子〜

I quite suddenly received a variety of gifts; baked goods, meat boiled down in soy, rice crackers and what not.  There was nothing special about the day.  Only, she sends me something good and special from time to time.

〜Good old memory  自信と努力〜

I am not sure why this happened but somehow, this phrase suddenly came into my mind, that is, “self-assurance and endeavor”.  

One day, one of the homeroom teachers at my elementary school gave each pupil a word or a phrase.  It was this “self-assurance and endeavor” that he presented to me.

どういうものか、ふと思い出したのが、この「自信と努力」です。小学校の担任の先生のお一人がクラスの皆それぞれに「言葉」をくださったことがあり、私がいただいたのが、「自信と努力」でした。

〜Awakening of the hibernating insects　啓蟄〜

Today falls on the first day of Jingzhe period or the time of hibernating insects emerge from underground, according to the solar terms system.

Thus, I wrote an old Chinese poem and a haiku associated with this time of year. 

The Chinese poem depicts something like;

Spring wind would not blow away my sorrow/

Longer days irritate me by causing deeper grief/

In the bottom of my heart/

The haiku expresses a laid-back spring day that the poet spends walking around at leisure just as following clouds.

今日は二十四節気の啓蟄にあたります。それで、この日にちなんだ漢詩と俳句を書きました。

それで漢詩は、

春風は私の愁いを吹き去ろうとはしてくれず、

長い春の日は憎らしくも、

私の心に深い嘆きを起こさせるばかり；

というような意味のようです。

〜Good luck prediction　いい夢、見ろよ！〜

This is “瑞夢”, or a dream that predicts good fortune.  I somehow have a feeling I had one last night.  However, I am not sure about it just because it slipped away the moment I woke up.

〜Hint of spring 　紅いの、白いの〜

These days, at last, we are beginning to feel the spring season approaching.  Here and there, we see Japanese plum blossoms of both red ones and white ones opening little by little.

I learned this old Chinese poem says “red blossoms of ume, Japanese plum trees, don’t seem to be willing to fully open yet but the buds are swelling.  So, I am checking the branches on the southern side”.

ようやく少しずつ春を感じるころとなりました。あちらこちらで紅梅、白梅が開いているのが見られます。

この詩では、紅梅がまだまだ満開にはなっていないけれども、蕾は膨らんできているので、南側の枝を見てみようと言っているらしいです。

〜Birthday flower 　紫羅欄花〜

Because the idea of the “birthday flowers” somewhat intrigued me, I checked it up only to find there were a number of such “lists”.  According to one of the lists, the flower for March 2nd is Matthiola incana.  One of its flower languages is “eternal and rich love”.

一年のそれぞれの日付けには「誕生花」があるとのことで、ちょっと面白いなと調べてみると、何種類もその「一覧」がありました。そのうちの一つによると、3月2日のお花はストック（紫羅欄花）で、代表的な花言葉は「永遠の豐かな愛」だそうです。

.
