〜Summer sweets, pt. 2　蕨餅もね〜

For my birthday last month, I got many kinds of sweets, including the soft adzuki bean jelly in a bamboo case that I wrote about the other day.  And here is another kind of traditional summer sweets, my favorite dessert called warabi-mochi, or soft jelly made from bracken starch, soybean flour and topped off with syrup.

〜Summer sweets　 今や貴重な〜

These sweets contained in genuine bamboo cases as the photos show were what we commonly saw a number of decades ago.  However regretfully, we only see cheap plastic cases these days.  A friend of mine found these valued traditional sweets in real bamboo tubes.

I hate the whole world that is constantly becoming cheaper and flimsier.

After crying my eyes out/

Wanted to eat/

Soft adzuki-bean jelly/

以前はこのような本物の竹の筒に入っているものが普通だと思いますが、近頃は安っぽいプラスチック製のものばかりを見るようになりました。友人がこの貴重な本物の竹入りを見つけて買ってきてくれました。

世の中全体が安っぽく、薄っぺらになっていくのが何とも嫌なことです。

〜Delightful gifts  焼き菓子〜

I quite suddenly received a variety of gifts; baked goods, meat boiled down in soy, rice crackers and what not.  There was nothing special about the day.  Only, she sends me something good and special from time to time.

旧い友人から突然焼き菓子やあられやお肉の佃煮などが送られてきました。別に特別感のない日でしたのに。ただ、ときどき何かを送ってくださいます、特別の何かを。
