〜Solar terms　楓蔦黄〜

This phrase, the seasonal phrase for around five days from today, means “maple leaves and ivy leaves begin to turn to autumn colors”.  So, I thought of taking pretty photos to accompany my calligraphy.  However, as we have been having warm days for November, especially in the daytime, I can’t find suitable places to take such photos around my house.

This is the seasonal phrase or solar term for about five days starting today, which does not mean that the water in the rice paddies goes dry as you may imagine from the letters, but actually, it means for the preparation of harvesting rice, the farmers drain the paddies around this time of year.

Because the moon last night was the harvest moon, the moon tonight is the sixteenth of a lunar month.

Because today marks the first day of the period of “higan”, which roughly is synonymous with “the afterlife”, I thought remembering ancestors would be something appropriate to do on this day.

〜Solar term　 玄鳥去〜

This is the seasonal phrase or solar term for about five days starting today, which apparently means it is about the time when swallows that migrated to Japan in early spring are leaving here and heading for the south.  I heard somewhere that migratory birds’ hometown is where they reproduce.  I am not sure, however, if this theory is true.  If true, Japan is their home.

〜Solar term　 鶺鴒鳴〜

This is the seasonal phrase or solar term for about five days starting today, which apparently means it is the time of year when wagtails begin singing in sweet voices.  Although I live close to a forest surrounding a shrine and see many kinds of birds daily, I am not sure which is this kind.  Maybe I have seen them sometimes and heard their beautiful chirping, I am just not sure.

〜Day for chrysanthemums　 新暦ではありますが〜

Although it is according to the new calendar, today marks the Double Ninth Festival, a day to celebrate the chrysanthemums I wrote a modern haiku on the flower.

The famous haiku poet, Takahama Kyoshi seems to be feeling kind of uneasy about the lacking petals.

Under the clear fall sky/

Noticed the lacking part of the petals/

Of a wild mum/
