This haiku is about a nostalgic love fortune-telling where you scatter flower petals one by one, but I am afraid young people today might not be familiar with it.  The fact that the girl in this haiku doesn’t scatter them all might show her reluctance to clearly define her feelings for the current love.  Young people these days probably wouldn’t understand that, though.

花占い最後の一つ残しおく

花びらを1枚ずつ散らしていく昔懐かしい恋占いの句ですが、今どきの若い人たちは知らないかもしれません。最後まで散らしてしまわないのは、自分の今の恋心をはっきりさせたくないという少女の気持ちかもしれません。今の若い人たちには解らないでしょうけれど。

＜Oh, the obon bonfire/

It seems my father and mother don’t want/

To go back to the Afterlife world/

Tonight, the Gozan Okuribi bonfires will be lit.  This is the day when those who had returned to this world for Obon period head back to the Afterlife.  Every year, however, I find myself thinking how short Obon is.  As I prepare the offerings and flowers for Obon at the family altar and then take them, I realize every year, “Ah, it is over now.”

＜送り火や帰りたがらぬ父と母＞

今夜は五山の送り火が灯されます。お盆にこちらの世界に戻っていた人たちが、あちら側に帰っていく日ですが、毎年思うのは、お盆って短いなということです。お盆のためのお供え物やお花を用意したり、それらをさげたりしているうちに、ああ、もう終わりだなと毎年思うのです。

Am I right to understand that “doyō-nami” refers to the big, powerful waves in the ocean around this time of year?  I thought this haiku expresses the power of the ocean waves that are still crashing onto the shore even though summer is drawing to a close.

土用波というのは、今頃の海の大きな波のことでしょうか。夏も終わりに近づくけれども、まだまだ大きく、力強い波が海辺に打ち寄せている、ということかなと思いました。

“Chorus of cicadas” is a seasonal word for summer in haiku society.  The phrase describes the chorus of cicadas that seems to pour down from the trees.  For Japanese people, it is a quintessential summer sound, but I have heard that people from abroad often find it difficult to relate to that sensation.

My soul at play/

Like violent rain falling all around/

「蝉しぐれ」は、木々から降り注ぐような蝉の大合唱を表す夏の季語で、日本人にとっては、「音」としての夏の風物詩ですが、外国の人たちには、そういう感覚は理解されにくいと聞きます。

The cityscape of artificial buildings symbolized with words such as triangles and squares, and a sudden, intense downpour so heavy that it makes the world appear totally white.  I found this was another haiku that shows an interesting contrast.

「街並の三角四角白雨来る」

三角や四角といった直線的な建物が象徴する人工的な街並みと、突然に世界が白く見えるほどの急で激しいにわか雨。これも面白い対比の俳句だと思いました。
