Tonight, the Gozan Okuribi bonfires will be lit.  This is the day when those who had returned to this world for Obon period head back to the Afterlife.  Every year, however, I find myself thinking how short Obon is.  As I prepare the offerings and flowers for Obon at the family altar and then take them, I realize every year, “Ah, it is over now.”

＜送り火や帰りたがらぬ父と母＞

今夜は五山の送り火が灯されます。お盆にこちらの世界に戻っていた人たちが、あちら側に帰っていく日ですが、毎年思うのは、お盆って短いなということです。お盆のためのお供え物やお花を用意したり、それらをさげたりしているうちに、ああ、もう終わりだなと毎年思うのです。
