According to the twenty-four solar terms system 二十四節気, today marks the coldest day or大寒.  Surely it is VERY cold today.

〜Good-looking boy 実に久しぶり〜

A sales clerk in a store I happened to stop by to do some shopping was a really beautiful young man, which made me very happy.  Now I wonder how long has it been since the last time I got so happy only because of seeing a good-looking boy.

ふと買い物のために立ち寄ったお店の店員さんが、まことに美しい青年だったのでとても嬉しく思いました。ふと出会った若者が綺麗だったからといって、こんなに嬉しく思ったのは久しぶりのことです。

〜Seven kinds 息災に〜

Today is January 7, and I am going to have rice porridge with seven kinds of spring herbs, following a long tradition that is meant to wish for healthy lives.  Apparently, one of the seven kinds is the Japanese parsley I wrote yesterday, however, I can’t tell which one that is out of these in a “seven herbs set” I bought at a grocery store.

Had to finely chop the seven spring flowers (vegetables)/

As a matter of fact, any kind of food must be chopped finely for old, weak people.

It is cold today and it feels like it is getting colder.  The weather forecast says it will get even colder from tomorrow, which I don’t like.

〜Little tree in my garden 満開〜

Exactly eight years ago, when my father passed away, this sasanqua tree in my garden was in full bloom.  The tree itself is much smaller now as I trimmed it considerably, though.

Yet again, kind neighbors gave me some yuzu citrus fruits from the tree in their garden. Now I am looking forward to enjoying the bath on the night of the winter solstice.  Tanka here is my favorite among all my own haikus and tankas.

〜Winter gifts　お洒落なマスクもいっぱい〜

The photo shows gifts from my long-time good friend from high school days and her pretty daughter.

Masks are just what I wanted right now and, moreover, they look so stylish!  In the envelope I found other cute, delightful things and a card.  Supreme winter gifts!  I have no idea how to express my happiness of receiving the presents.

The bamboo trees the photo shows aren’t as many as being called a “forest”, but I thought the photo has a cold impression that matches the haiku.

Little scarlet nandina fruits look so attractive in this cold weather.  The haiku poet, I think, found them sort of “straightforwardly” red.
