〜Jupiter’s position  瑞祥〜

I learned that from today until about the end of October, the Jupiter will be placed where friendship and esperance are symbolized for me.  I only sense auguries of good.

Incidentally, the picture stand I use here is from a paperer called Kobaido.

〜Common old phrase  よく見聞きしますよね〜

“Balmy southern wind is blowing.”

I am afraid many people would ask why I want to write this well-known and often seen and heard Zen phrase.  Moreover, I found a number of theories about its origin.

Still, I have a pleasant feeling when writing this passage and I think that concludes all well (and good).

薫風自南来。

今更感の強い一節です。五月によく見聞きする禅語ですし。調べてみると由来には諸説あるようです。

〜Convincing flower language  白いトルコ桔梗〜

These are Eustomas that caught my attention at a flower shop.

The flower language for the white variety is “tender loving care”, which I found very convincing from their appearance.

トルコ桔梗です。お花屋さんでふと目に留まりました。

白のお花の花言葉は「思いやりの心」で、お花の姿からぴったりだと思いました。

〜Happy Mother’s Day  母との共作〜

The photo shows a calligraphic collaboration with mom and other people.  

The large letters 金魚 or goldfish were done by my mother, the small letters, a passage from an ancient Chinese poem about goldfish were by me, the origami goldfish were made by a care worker who were diligently taking care of my mom and the frame was designed by my paperer.

The other photo shows the goldfish found in the sanctuary of a neighborhood temple that enshrines Sarasvati.

写真の書は、母やその他の人たちとの共作です。

大きな「金魚」の文字は母が書き、小さな字は私が書きましたが、金魚についての古い中国の漢詩の一節で、折り紙の金魚は母の世話を熱心にしてくださっていた介護士さんが作ってくれて、額自体のデザインはいつもお世話になる表具屋さんによるものです。

もう一枚の写真は、近所の弁天さんの境内にいる金魚です。

〜Path  専門分野〜

Responding to my request, a friend said, “道 michi”, which usually means a road or a way.  However, this letter is used to express special fields of arts, such as in 茶道 way of tea, 華道flower arrangement art, 書道 calligraphy, and many other arts, including a variety of 武道martial arts, such as 柔道, judo or the Japanese art of self-defense and 剣道, kendo or the Japanese art of fencing.

As shown above, there are so many 道’s, but they seem to have something in common: a desire for truth or perfection.

Thus, someone acquired to be proficient in one field after having given full attention to it seems to sense this commonality.

お好きな字とか言葉を教えてと頼んだら、「道」と答えた友人がいました。通常、道と言えば道路の道だと考えられますが、様々な分野の追求すべき「道」もあります。茶道に華道に書道に、それから柔道や剣道といった諸々の武道。

そしてこれらの「道」には共通点があるように見受けられます。何かしらの真理に迫ろうとする精神です。

従って、これらの道のお稽古のうち何か一つの分野で秀でている人、人生においてその分野に真剣に向き合ったことのある人は、そうした全ての「道」に共通するところを理解しておられるようです。

〜More rainy days than usual リラの花〜

Although it is sunny this morning, we have had more rainy days than usual spring days.

The photo shows lilacs in a neighbor’s garden.  I hear this kind of plant is difficult to grow and blow flowers.

The period of about two weeks from today is designated as Lixia, that is, today being the first day of summer according to the twenty-four solar terms.  Accordingly, I wrote a Chinese poem and a haiku concerning this time year.

〜Cool looking glass container お花を浮かべて〜

I put some flower petals on the water in a glass container.  Then I placed it in front of my late mother’s photograph, thinking it would create a cool feeling and that it would help praying for her soul.
