〜Too philosophical for me 春の禅語〜

I searched for Zen phrases of this season to use as materials of my calligraphic activity.  Then I found this one, apparently meaning “just forget everything, including the world, ourselves even about satori, or achieving enlightenment and listen to nature concentratedly and consider it the best to be as we are, then we will reach the state of absolute truth.”  

However, the problem is that I just don’t understand what I wrote above.

書の題材に使えればと、この季節の禅語を探してみました。見つけはしましたが、「一切のこと、すなわち世の中、自分、悟りを開くことさえ忘れて自然の声を近くに聞き、あるがままを好しとすると絶対の境地を得る」ということらしいですが、困ったことに書いていて解りません。

〜Very well-known song  さくら、さくら〜

This is somewhat old piece of mine and I may be able to create something better now.  But yesterday I posted an entry about the cherry blossoms near my house, which kind of fueled me to post another one.  Its material is a very old Japanese song about cherry blossoms believed to have been composed around the end of Edo Period.

少し前に書いたもので、今ならもうちょっと上手に書けるような気もしますが、昨日桜について書きましたので、勢いに乗って、もう一つ投稿します。この古謡は江戸時代の終わり頃に作られたとされるようです。

〜Mother’s calligraphy and my haiku　母娘のコラボ〜

In this season of beautiful cherry blossoms, a lot of people post about the flowers.  So, I had a little thinking what I should do and then I decided I, too, would write about the flowers along the Takano River near my house.

The large letter, “桜 (cherry)” was done my late mother and the small letters are my own haiku about taking a walk together.

Petals of cherry blossoms dancing in the air/

Mother-daughter promenades/

Forever and ever/

Chio

桜の花のこの季節にはたくさんの人たちが桜について投稿しておられます。私はどうしようかしらと少し考えてから、家の近くの高野川沿いの桜のことを書こうと思いました。

「桜」の大きな字は亡母に書いてもらいました。小さい字は私の句です。

〜Clear and lively  晴明〜

The period from today and lasting for about two weeks is called 晴明 (literally clear and bright) according to the 24 solar system, that is, a period of everything’s being clear and lively.  Apparently, the wind around this time informs that springtime is arriving.  I arranged a Chinese poem and a haiku about this period into one work of calligraphy.

今日から2週間ほどは、二十四節気の「晴明」の時期に当たります。清らかで生き生きした時期。またこの頃の風は春の到来を知らせるものだそうです。この時期を題材にした漢詩と俳句を一つの作品にまとめました。

〜Only form and sound  ひらがな〜

To every post, I attach a sentence asking for you, readers’ favorite letter or word.  Almost all people react to this request showing their favorite Chinese character(s).  Because they have meanings as well as sounds, it is easy and natural for people to reflect their thoughts to each Chinese character.  

However, one young woman, beautiful and graceful, mentioned a hiragana, a phonetic alphabet in Japanese language.  In this case, she presented “ま (ma)”, the initial letter of her name.  I, too, have a liking for hiragana despite their lack of meaning.  These days I often use a little seal on my calligraphic works with only one character “と (to)” my initial letter carved in it.

私は投稿する記事に必ず、お好きな字や言葉を教えてほしいと書いています。そして、大抵の人たちは、この「字」を漢字だと解釈されます。それは、漢字には意味がありますから、思い入れを投影しやすいということだと思います。けれども、同じようにお好きな字は？　と尋ねたらひらがなの「ま」を挙げてくれた若くたおやかな女性がいました。確かに、私も意味がなくてもひらがなは好きです。私もこのところ、自分の名前の初めの字（音）「と」だけを彫ってもらった小さな雅号印を多用しています。

〜Dolls Festival Day　旧暦が好き〜

Today is April 3rd.  

However, according to the old calendar, it just falls on March 3rd, that is, “上巳” or Dolls Festival Day.  As in Kyoto there still are quite a few households where these traditional events are observed according to the old calendar, I feel both intrigued and familiar with the old calendar.

今日は4月3日ですが、旧暦ではちょうど3月3日、つまり上巳の節句・雛祭りに当たります。京都では今なおこのような伝統行事は旧暦に則って祝うご家庭が多いですし、私も旧暦に興味があります。

〜Same flowers every spring  うちの玄関なのですが〜

The photo shows the plant with flowers just by my entrance.

I think it blooms annually around this time of year.  However, I have paid almost no attention to the blossoms so far.  And as I have no idea what it is called, I asked my friend who is very knowledgeable about this kind of matter.  And then, she told me the plant was called Rhaphiolepis_umbellata, or literally, plums of rundles or wheels.  

Then I looked for its flower languages and found out “declaration of love”, “comfort of breeze” and “viridity”.  Especially the second one, “comfort of breeze” should suit this time of year, I thought.  Others seem passable any time.

家の玄関のすぐそばに咲いているお花です。

毎年この時期には咲いているのでしょうけれど、気にしたことはありませんでした。それで、名前も分からないので、詳しい友人に尋ねました。シャリンバイ（車輪梅）というのだそうです。

花言葉も調べますと、「愛の告白」、「その風の心地よさ」、「純真」の三つで、とりわけ2番目の「その風の心地よさ」というのがこの季節にいいなと思いました。残りの二つはいつでも通用しそうです。
