〜Solar terms  穀雨〜

The period of about two weeks starting today is designated as Guyu according to the twenty-four solar terms.  Accordingly, I wrote a Chinese poem and a haiku concerning this time year.

〜Two major meanings  魂〜

Responding to my request for a favorite character or word, a good friend of mine gave me “魂 or soul”.  

However here is a little problem, that is, 魂 has two major meanings; “sense of energy of the living” and “spirit of the dead”.

In order to clarify that I chose to be the living people’s side, I wrote “beautiful soul” instead of only “soul”.

何か好きな字とか言葉とかを教えてと頼んだら、ある友人が「魂」を挙げてくれました。

でも、魂って生きている人の心の活力といった意味と、死んだ人の霊魂の意味があるのですよね。

生きている人の方が良いように思いましたので、ただの「魂」ではなくて、「美しい魂」にしました。

〜Two interpretations  冬の野火〜

It roughly means apparently, “In winter, withered grass seem burned up by wildfires, the roots actually survive and burgeon when spring winds begin blowing.”  

There seems to be two interpretations to this Zen phrase: one is “spring season symbolizes regeneration of hope” and the other; “even if you think you got rid of earthly desires through acetic trainings, worldly desires remain at the base and they can’t easily be pruned away.”

この禅語はざっくり言うと、「冬になって枯れた草を野火が焼き尽くしても草は根まで燃え尽きることはなく、春風が吹いて来るとまた芽生えてくる」という意味らしいですが、二通りの解釈が出来るようで、希望は消えないという良い意味と、頑張って修行して煩悩が消えたようでも、実際には簡単にはなくならないという望ましくない意味があるようです。

〜Name for the April full moon 小さなお花〜

〜Name for the April full moon 小さなお花〜

.

As today’s moon is the full moon, just like last month, I thought I would write something about the April full moon name from the native Americans’ tradition.  

I found out it was “pink moon” but this “pink” isn’t a name of a color but a name of the flowers of this time, moss phlox, for instance.  

So, these are the flower languages, Esperance, Patience, Mildness and others.

今日は満月なので、先月も書きましたが、ネイティブアメリカンの伝統から4月の満月の名前を見ると、「ピンクムーン」。でも、このピンクは色ではなくて、芝桜などのお花の名前らしいので、その芝桜の花言葉を書きました。

〜Peaceful sight 水車〜

I found a waterwheel in a local botanical garden.  I sat on a nearby bench and watched it for a while.

〜“Tulip” in Chinese language　美酒〜

First, I looked for a Chinese word for “tulip”.  Then I searched for a Chinese poem including this word to find this poem about tasty alcoholic drinks.  Repeated searching sometimes takes you to an unexpected place.

〜Viridity of green maple leaves 葉っぱでも花言葉〜

Young maple leaves are simply gorgeous.  Then I thought, because of their beauty, they might have flower languages just as flowers do.  And I found out they did.

〜Third try　時空を越えて〜

This is my third try to write an old Chinese poem composed around the end of eighth century which apparently inspired a contemporary Poland-born writer to create an excellent picture book.  A little while ago, someone told me about this story of the picture book that intrigued me so much I tried the same motif twice so far.  

However, I regret it didn’t reach the point I hoped.  I only wish everyone in the world would peacefully enjoy various kinds of arts.

少し前にポーランド生まれの作家の絵本について教えてくださった方がいました。興味深いのは、その作家は8世紀終わり頃の詩に着想を得てこの絵本を執筆したということで、このインスピレーションの元となった詩をこれまでに2回書きました。これが3度目のトライなのですが、なかなか自分が思うような作品になりません。

ただ、世界中の人たちが、のんびりと藝術を楽しめればいいと思うのです。
