〜Vernal Equinox Day　春の季語〜

As today happens to mark the Vernal Equinox Day, I wrote two haikus about spring season.  I learned that the child’s plays such as “bubbles”, “seesaws”, “swings” and others are categorized as spring-time seasonal words in haiku world and that it is because when spring comes children start playing vigorously outside.  I thought haiku thinking is really interesting.

Incidentally, the drawstring pouches behind by calligraphy are beautiful works by Ootakoubou.

Butterfly may be born/

Among the crowds/

Vernal equinoctial week/

Gears working busily inside/

Bubbles/

今日は春分の日でもありますし、春の俳句を書きました。シャボン玉やシーソーやブランコなど子どもの遊びは春の季語で、それは暖かくなって子どもたちが元気に外で遊ぶようになるからだそうです。俳句の季語は面白いものだと思いました。

私の書に隠れていますが、巾着袋はおおた工房さんのお作品です。

〜Gracious rain　好きな言葉〜

〜Time is on my …　この世で最上のもの〜

After I surfed the net for some time with no specific purpose, words of “the most wonderful thing in this world is time.  To get it on your side” vaguely remained in my memory.  I can’t recall on what kind of site I saw it, though.  It is not that writing it here seems a hassle but the wordage just dwells in my memory.  Now I have a slight feeling it was by some celebrity.

なんとなくネットを見ていて、「この世で最も素晴らしいものは時間だ。時間を味方につけることだ」というような文言がふと印象に残りました。ぼんやり見ていただけで、何のページだったか覚えていません。ここに書くのが面倒なのではなくて、本当にただぼんやりとその言葉が印象に残っているのです。誰かの名言だったのかしら。

〜Full moon in March　芋虫か・・・〜

The tradition of the Native Americans of naming the full moons in each month intrigued me.  As today’s moon is the full moon in March, I checked its name to find the term “worm moon” to my little disappointment.  For, I was expecting something more romantic.  

Then I remembered I wrote before that in the twenty-four solar terms system that is believed to have started in ante-Christum China has “Jingzhe” at the beginning of March when hibernating worms are supposed to emerge from underground.

I thought people in old times must have felt and thought in a similar way about changing of the seasons both in the East and the West.

The most short-tempered worm will emerge from underground/

And move on to the shambles or the real world/ 

Full of fights, rages, pathos that derive from envy and suspicion/

ネイティブアメリカンの伝統に、各月の満月それぞれに名前があるというものがあって、とても面白いと思います。それで今日は3月の満月なので、その名前を調べたら、worm moonつまり芋虫の類の月だったので、ちょっとがっかりしました。もっとロマンティックな名前を期待していましたので。

でも、紀元前の中国発祥とされる二十四節気でも、先日書きましたように、3月初めには冬眠していた虫たちが地中から這い出てくる日である「啓蟄」がありますので、昔の時代の人々は季節の移り変わりに対して洋の東西を問わず同じように考え、感じていたのだろうと思いました。

“Connections between people created through calligraphy”

They come from all directions.  From one direction and then, another and they encounter each other and link together.  As I am getting older and older, those connections are becoming more and more intricately interrelated.

〜First blossom to open　先駆者！〜

I learned that flower languages for the Japanese quince are “forerunner”, “splendor of fairyhood” and others.  The lady of my neighbors who has this tree in their garden said “It is the first bloomers of spring, right?”  Yes, that is right!  That is why its flower language should be “forerunner”.

One more thing I remember is the flower arranging teacher I used to practice under when young was very good at large-scale arrangements portrayed as a spring scenery featuring this kind of tree.

木瓜の花の花言葉は先駆者、妖精の輝きなどだそうです。ご近所のこの木瓜の木のあるお家の奥さまは、「春一番に咲くでしょ」とおっしゃいました。なるほど、それで先駆者なのでしょう。

若い頃お習いしていた華道の先生は、木瓜を主役に立てた景色花がお得意だったことを思い出します。

〜Difficult issue to deal with　春は黄色〜

Flowers of mimosa, I hear, that in Italy represent beginning of spring and at the same time, a tradition of giving gifts to the close people, as well.  The day of the event, March 8th is officially designated as “International Women’s Day” in many countries.

However, I think how you regard “women” can substantially differentiate how you regard this “day”.

As I happened to find a fun modern haiku about the flower, I tried to express this amusingness with somewhat peculiar lines.

Mimosa branches swing/

Just can’t recall how the love/

Ended/

ミモザのお花はイタリアでは春を告げると同時に、親しい人たちに贈り物をする伝統行事の象徴だそうです。その行事の日、つまり3月8日は国際婦人デーとして多くの国々で指定されているようです。

しかしながら、「女の人」をどう捉えるかによって、 この「日」の捉え方も大きく違ってくるかと思います。

ちょっと面白い現代俳句を見つけましたので、その面白さを表す線で書いてみました。

〜Delightful thank-you gifts　我が名は、知櫻〜

I received wonderful thank-you gifts from a very good friend who I sent a small box of chocolate to last month.  What made me this happy is that I found so many “cherry blossoms” in the big box, only a part of which is in the photo.  My name as a calligrapher has the letter 櫻 or cherry, cherry tree or cherry blossom, in it.

It is literally “shallow spring” or springtime has just started, which means there maybe some cold days ahead, as well.

〜Well-known passage　春の宵〜

The passage means spring evenings are extremely pleasant and so they deserve a fortune.  I only hope we will get to enjoy this kind of warm, balmy, sweet evenings soon.  However, it is still too cold to be feeling like this after sunset.
