〜Exhibition of bamboo lanterns　優しい灯り〜

A very good friend of mine who always rushes to me and gives great help with a variety of troubles is now immensely into making bamboo crafts.  Her house is near the producing area of bamboo shoots in a vast bamboo forest.  She told me this wonderful art started with the effort to improve the forest’s condition there.

Although she still seems to belong to the beginners’ category, I found her work amazing and felt her warm feelings.

Thus, this old Chinese poem I found describes a poet playing the harp and singing in the deep forest without being noticed, with only the moon illuminating the scene.

いつもいろいろの場面で助けてくれる良い友人が、このところ竹細工作品作りに凝っておられます。彼女のお家は、古くから筍の産地で竹林が広がる辺りにあり、この素晴らしいアートは元々その辺りで行われる竹林の整備から始まったそうです。

彼女はまだ初心者と呼ばれるようですが、作者の心を感じる見事な作品だと思いました。

それで、詩人が林の奥深いところで、琴を弾じ、歌を吟じるけれども、誰にも気づかれない。月明かりだけが詩人を照らすという詩を見つけて書きました。

〜Chinese lantern fruits　お盆ですから〜

It has been a common legend that our ancestors’ souls come back to this world during the Bon period.   The reason, I learned, we often set up Chinese lantern fruits is that the orange fruits work as lanterns that light the path of the dead to lead them back into this world.

Mother, come back/
Take aim at the vermilion lanterns/

〜In a faraway country 　海の向こうまで〜

I brought these three calligraphic works to a group exhibition held in Poznań, Poland in November 2017 in which I was allowed to take part.  The smallest one is definitely the most important because it is by my late teacher, a calligraphy master.  The others are my old one and a comparatively new one.

〜Little folding fans　いつ使いましょうか〜

I found these small folding fans at a used articles shop. However, I no longer practice tea ceremony and I don’t think I will have a chance to attend a tea ceremony gathering. I am just wondering when and where someone like me should use these folding fans.

古道具屋さんで見つけた扇子です。今ではお茶のお稽古はしていませんし、お茶会に行くこともまず無いと思われます。そういう人間は、こういう小さい扇子をいつどこで使ったらいいのでしょうか。

〜Solar terms 　涼風至〜

This is the solar term for about five days starting yesterday which means “Cool breeze starts to blow”.  It is still unbearably hot, however, we feel coolness through little triggers all the more because of this heat.

〜Another attempt　二人の詩人〜

A visitor at the Tokyo venue of the traveling exhibition some time ago taught me about Li Shangyin, another poet from the same days as Li He, one of whose major works I chose for my piece to be displayed at the exhibition.  Thus, this time I chose a work by Li Shangyin as a motif for my calligraphy as the photo here shows.  I am really grateful to this visitor and pleased to see my own horizon of art expand.

Li Shangyin was born approximately twenty years after Li He who is often called a “poet of dreams or mirage”.  It is believed that the former had a special emotional involvement toward the latter.

先日の巡回展の東京会場においでくださったある方が、私の作品が李賀の詩を取り上げたものだったので、同時代の別の詩人 李商隠 を教えてくれました。そこで、画像にありますように、今度は李商隠の詩を書きました。この方に感謝しておりますし、自分自身のアートの幅が広くなるのを感じ、大変嬉しく思います。

李商隠は、「幻想詩人」と呼ばれる李賀より20年ばかり遅れて誕生し、李賀に対して強い思い入れがあったとのことです。

〜Unfamiliar butterfly　手水舎に〜

I went to the nearby shrine following my custom of paying an official visit to it at the beginning of a month, I found a pretty big, black butterfly at the small stone pavilion with water and ladles where you purify your hands and mouth before worshiping.  I thought it was a rare kind.

Today is the first day of the annual exhibition of uchiwa or round paper fans called “Exhibition of 100 paper fans”.
