〜Flower gifts　鉢植え胡蝶蘭〜

This potted Phalaenopsis orchid, which arrived as a congratulatory gift at the venue of my solo exhibition celebrating my seventieth birthday, watched all through the event from the back of the exhibition hall.  Although pink Phalaenopsis orchids are often found, these yellow flowers, I thought, fit better with the name “Phalaenopsis orchid” because the Japanese word for “Phalaenopsis orchid”, 胡蝶蘭, literally means “butterfly orchid”.

お祝いとしていただいたこの鉢植えの胡蝶蘭は、古希記念の個展の会期中ずっと会場の奥から見守ってくれていました。胡蝶蘭と言えば、ピンクのものを良く見かけますが、こういう黄色いお花の方が、胡蝶蘭という名前によく合っていると思いました。

〜Hydrangeas in my friend’s garden　いろんな色、いろんな形〜

〜Now, I know I like calligraphy　字っていいですね〜

When I met a distant relative who I rarely get to see, I showed him my calligraphy on my phone’s screen, he said, “Now, I know I like calligraphy.  It has something inside to express.  Something that the calligrapher has to show to others”.

At that moment, I realized once again that what he said should be my ultimate goal as a calligrapher.

On top of that, I knew perfectly well then that the real thing such as my calligraphy on Japanese traditional paper manufactured for calligraphic use is not the only thing that can convey the nature of calligraphy.

Actually, I had asked this sentence to be printed on the invitation postcards of the last exhibition.

なかなか会えない親族に会ったとき、スマホ越しに私の書をお見せしたら、「字っていいですね。心がある」というようなことを言ってもらえました。

そのとき、それが書家として私の目指すべきものなのだと再確認しました。しかも、書道用の和紙に私の字が乗っているという実物でなくても、『書』は伝わるのだなと解りました。

そして実は、先日の古希展の案内葉書にもその文言は印刷していただいていたのです。
