〜Season words　 山茶始開〜

This is a seasonal phrase for this time of year meaning camellia flowers start blooming.  We can enjoy camellias in bloom all through the winter till the springtime.  And that is why, I heard, the Chinese character for this plant consists of “tree” and “spring”, despite the plants’ image of “winter blossoms”.

この時期の七十二候の名称で、椿が咲き始めるという意味のようですが、椿って冬中ずっと、それから春まで咲いていますよね。だから椿という漢字は木偏に春なのだと聞きました。イメージとしては冬の花ですが。

〜Flower languages　 季節は違えど〜

This is a gerbera in my garden.  I took the photo around a week ago, but the flower looks just the same even now.  I found out the flower words for red gerberas and wrote them, that is, mystery, passionate love of mystery, positiveness, limitless challenges,.

庭のガーベラです。1週間ぐらい前に撮った写真ですが、今まだこれと変わらない様子です。赤いガーベラの花言葉は、神秘・燃える神秘の愛・前向き・限りなき挑戦などらしいので、それらを書きました。

Yesterday I wrote that according to the old calendar, yesterday fell on the first day of the winter season.  As a matter of fact, however, the photo shows the sky in Kyoto yesterday.

In response to my request for a character (letter) or a word you love, someone gave 星月夜, literally “Star Moon Night”.  I found it a truly beautiful phrase, and this person says the classic painting by Van Gogh comes to her mind, as well.

〜Season’s wordage　 楓蔦黄〜

This is the symbolic phrase for this time of year.  It means leaves of maples and ivies change to autumn colors.  This one well fit my actual feeling of the season.

〜Groove !　過去から未来へ〜

Sometime ago, a friend of mine sent me a message telling me about her favorite character 楓maple (tree, leaf) with her love for her favorite band and one of its songs.  Apparently, someone saw my post about this thought of his favorite song of his favorite band and gave me this letter 轍 a rut or a groove.  And so, this is my 『轍』.

I guess a rut is something that is formed behind us as we move along.  However, I thought a rut (or a furrow) is essential in one’s live because our past moves on to our future. 

Incidentally, I found one of the English equivalences for this word is “groove”, which thrilled me quite a lot.

以前お好きなポップミュージックの歌詞から思いついた字「楓」を知らせてくれた友人がいました。それを書いた私の投稿を見て、ご自分の好きな曲のタイトルから「轍」を教えてくれた人がいたので、今度はそれを書きました。

轍というのは自分の進行につれて自分の後に出来るものですよね。けれども、過去があるからこそ、それに続く未来があるのだから、轍は大切なものなのだと思いました。

I am now preparing to participate in the event of postcard collection.  Today I wrote “for a sequel of a dream”, that might be translated as “in pursuit of what is beyond a dream”.  I hope these will be loved at the venue.

〜Popular old saying これしか思いつきませんでした〜

Fruits of calabashes or bottle gourds have been used as popular containers for various things after dried and tailored.  I enjoyed taking part in a workshop where we participants enjoyed decorating dried calabashes with strips of beautiful fabrics.  

This is a very well-known and used phrase meaning something totally unexpected but very good happens.  It literally means a healthy, vigorous colt pops out of a calabash.

〜Biggest lake ゆったりと〜

Lake Biwa is the biggest lake of the country located in the neighboring prefecture, Shiga from where I always lived.  Since early childhood, I loved going there.  When I was really very young, my late parents took me there to enjoy a pleasure boat ride.  In summer, they would take me there for a swim.  After growing up, I regularly went to some places in Shiga Prefecture two or three times a year to work in operations of English proficiency examinations and every time I got to see the magnificent views of the lake. 

This is a passage from a well-known students’ song about the lake and surrounding area.

幼い頃から琵琶湖に行くと嬉しい気分になりました。本当にまだ幼かった頃、両親が一度遊覧船に乗りに連れて行ってくれました。夏には泳ぎに連れて行ってくれました。大人になってからは、年に2度か3度、英語技能の試験に関わる仕事のために滋賀県のいくつかの会場に行きましたが、その通勤途中でも必ずその雄大な姿を見る機会がありました。
