〜Solar term　 禾乃登〜

This is the solar term for around five days from today, meaning the tassels of the rice are getting yellow day by day.   That is to say, harvesting time is coming shortly, however, this is a terrible season of possible disasters from typhoons.

今日から5日間ほどの七十二候です。日に日に稲穂はこぼれるように実り、黄色く色づき始めるという意味のようです。すると、いよいよ刈入れ間近ですが、この時期は台風が多いのが怖いです。

〜Still too hot　思い出ばかり〜

It is still too hot for me to be practicing calligraphy hard. I have only been remembering a variety of things about the Mother-Daughter exhibition held last fall. The best thing about the it was more people than I had expected came to the venue and saw my mother’s calligraphy.

I am very well aware that it is high time now for me to be trying very hard at calligraphy practice, rather than remembering about the past, though.

どうしても暑過ぎて、お稽古への力が湧いてこない感じです。昨年秋に開いた母娘展のことをあれこれと思い出しているばかりです。思っていたよりも大勢の人に来てもらって、母の字を見てもらえたのが何よりも良かったと思います。

それにしても、過ぎたことを思い出してばかりいないで、しっかりお稽古せねばと解ってはいるのですが。

〜Moon’s knowledge　九月だ〜

Because September began today, I searched and wrote a Zen term for the month.  It seems to mean that the moon is very well aware that she looks the most attractive in the fall.

〜Windows of the house　朝起きて、まず〜

Despite which season it is, I first open the windows of my house on getting up.  Just as this haiku says, it seems to make the house happy.

〜Sound of oncoming autumn　漢字と仮名〜

It has been a little cooler in the morning and evening.  And we hear the sound of insects chirping.  Following is a passage I found while netsurfing with no particular purpose.

“The reason the insects’ songs sound beautiful is that they are not seized by the contents that they try to convey to others or distort them arbitrarily, but they only try to harmonize with the cosmic music.”

The photo shows my work from a couple of years ago of an old Chinese poem and an old Japanese children’s song of insects’ songs in autumn.

朝夕は涼しくなってきて、虫の声も聞かれます。下記は何となくネットサーフィンをしていて見つけた一節です。

「虫の鳴き声が美しいのは、彼らが相手に伝える内容に囚われたり、恣意的に歪めてしまうことなく、ただただ宇宙的な音楽に調和しようとしているから」

画像は2〜3年前の虫の声を題材にした漢詩と童謡です。

〜Term for the end of summer　晩夏のこと〜

I found a new expression for “the end of the summer season” while netsurfing as usual.  The first unfamiliar character apparently means the end.  The second one is “summer” in cursive style.

いつものようにネットを見ていて、夏の終わりを表す目新しい言葉を見つけました。初めのあまり見かけない字は「終わり」の意味らしく、二つ目は草書体の「夏」です。

〜Traditional community events　古き良き日本〜

Bon Odori festival is scheduled to be performed on the grounds of the neighborhood shrine.  Ladies belonging to the local women’s society have been working for it.

I hear at international events for young people, only the young from Japan don’t know how to dance their folk dances.  I think that is because fewer people want to take part in this kind of festivity and the number of these events is decreasing.

I am not young still I don’t know the bon odori movements.

Bon Odori has begun/

今夜は近くのお宮さんで盆踊りが催される予定です。地域の婦人会の皆さんがお世話をしてくださっています。

若い人たちのための国際的なイベントでは、日本の若者たちだけが自国の民族舞踊が踊れないと聞きます。皆が盆踊りなどの行事に参加しなくなって、こういう催し自体が減っているからだと思います。私は若くありませんが、盆踊りは踊れません。

〜Exhibition of bamboo lanterns, pt. 4　続々々・優しい灯り〜

Following my third post about the fantastic exhibition of bamboo craftworks, this is the fourth one quoting the very first part of The Tale of the Bamboo-Cutter, which is considered the oldest surviving work of a “Monogatari” or fictional narrative containing folklores.

The original story is extremely long and here is a tiny part of its beginning.

“Once upon a time, there lived an old man who cut bamboo in the fields and hills.  He crafts various things out of those bamboo.  He was called Sanuki no Miyatsuko.  One day he found a bamboo with light at the bottom part.  He approached it wondering what it was.  Then he found a light in the bamboo trunk.  He went closer to it and found a very small and adorable person sitting inside the trunk.”
