The most well-known haiku

It is a result of copying practice of my late teacher’s example.

.

This is a haiku written by Matsuo Basho, one of the most representative Japanese haiku poets is probably the most famous haiku in the world.

.

It depicts the sound of a frog leaping in an old pond.

.

As it is written in a plain style portraying a smallest, the most commonplace event, it perversely has produced a vast number of interpretations.

Knock on … Write on wood

Sometimes I feel like writing on materials other than paper, the most common material for calligraphy.

.

These are my latest attempts on wood.

.

I am now excited only thinking what materials would be possible or hopefully favorable for calligraphy.

All’s well …

The art marché period closed with no major troubles, only that it was quite wet for the first two days.  But today, the third and last day, it was fine pleasant.

.

And we had many visitors at the venue.

.

Moreover, it was very inspiring and exciting to talk with the artists in other fields.  I learned a lot from them.

Rainy day

Today it rained on and off almost all day, sometimes very heavily.

.

Fewer people than a normal Saturday were walking on the street that the marché venue faces.

.

And we had only few visitors today.

Enso (円相) by my late teacher

My first calligraphy teacher left me many works including this one.

.

However, actually, it was the one presented to my mother when she brought some festive red rice she specially cooked for him and his family.

How things were arranged for the last time is shown here.

.

And this time I did it this way.

.

The event begins tomorrow and will finish on Sunday.

.

If you get interested in my calligraphy, please come to the venue and see it yourselves!!

Days of swamp lilies

Today falls on the 11th day from the summer solstice.  The subdivided solar term for this day and five days after that is “swamp lily”.

.

They say these symbolic seasonal periods suggest what should be done in farming.

.

I learned while surfing websites that in this case, it indicates rice planting should be done during the period from the summer solstice and this swamp lily day.

Day of hard rain

It rained quite heavily almost all day today.

.

Somehow rainy weather doesn’t bother me so much.  I like listening to the rain falling and smelling the rain.

Letter for playing music

This letter means to play musical instruments.

.

Impregnating the brush with plenty of water before writing makes me thrilled.

.

Still, the brush soon gets dry.

Gardenia flowers

I found gardenia flowers in my garden very beautiful after a rainy night and found this poem by a Japanese female poet and painter about 200 years ago.

Long life

These are my old works which I happened to find while cleaning up my house.  The two letters are simply “long” and “life or to live”.

.

I don’t remember exactly but I think it was a task for a practice session about ten years ago, when I haven’t given much thought about the phrase but just followed my teacher’s instruction.

.

Now I think “long life” is a very important thing to people concerning what could be accomplished in life.

Blossoming irises

This is one of the subdivided solar terms that represents the period around the last week of June with a beautiful image of the flower iris, an iconic flower of the rainy season.
