〜Not a genuine Zen saying

Here is a strip of paper I wrote on 5 or 6 years ago.  While the word seems to deviate from a typical Zen saying, I believe our teacher who gave us this as a model likely intended these five characters to convey a meaning along the lines of “A cup of tea made with sincerity has a profound depth of flavor” or “Through tea, genuine feelings flow between people.”

〜Segmented solar terms

This refers to the 72 segmented seasonal terms around this time of year, when insects hide away and shut their doors; in other words, it marks the period when insects that were active in summer begin preparing for hibernation.

〜Can’t remember how it started

Utmost Encounter

One day, I unexpectedly met someone who naturally understands

What I treasure

It is a mysterious connection

I am grateful to have met her

And

I will continue cherishing this meeting forever

〜Unexpected side of my mother

I remember/

Beneath the bright moon, my old mother’s heart/

Slowly unwound/

I remember taking my late mother, in her wheelchair, out for evening walks.  When she saw a beautiful moon, she would be so happy, and even after getting home, she would say, “Oh, I saw such a beautiful moon!  I wish I had prayed to it.”  I never would have thought she was the kind of person to say something like that.

〜Moment and eternity

Making a moment into eternity

I find myself thinking that a moment and the eternity that is made from connected moments may, in essence, be the same.

〜An off-key haiku

My face is being peeped at/

White chrysanthemums/

Yellow chrysanthemums/

Calligraphy and translation by Chio

It is a somewhat unconventional haiku, but I found the shift in perspective interesting.  Is the person looking at the chrysanthemums, or is it the other way around?

〜Autumnal items

Japanese silver grass, chestnut husks, chrysanthemums, and bellflowers.  And then, a Chinese poem and a haiku that thematize the full moon.  These are things that celebrate the autumn moon and highlight its beauty.

〜Weight of living

I ask the autumn wind/

What it weighs/

To live/

Calligraphy and translation by Chio

The weight of living so far, the accumulated experiences.  And even more about meeting people and parting with them… I guess that is what it comes down to.
