Lions Gate

Those involving things spiritual often talk about the Lions Gate, which according to them connects this world and the universe and is open for these two weeks.

.

Then I found an interesting text that says the Lion in this case is not the animal but the Sphinx.

.

Inspired by this theory, I wrote the Chinese phrase for the “Sphinx”.

Scarlet

This is my version of “Scarlet by the Rolling Stones”.

.

Now, looking back on my life so far, I am certain I have been pretty happy all my life.

To begin with, only the presence of this band in my life was such a fortunate happening.  It brought in so much worthiness into my life.

This is another copying practice I did from one of the models my first calligraphy teacher wrote for me decades ago.

Some of the kana letters or Japanese phonogramic letters are obsolete at present.

Only showing my desperate wish at the moment

This means “cool air begins to blow”, which is a segmentalized phrase for around the first week of August according to the ancient seasonal, solar terms.

.

However, I am certain that no one will agree to this.  These days it is unbearably hot and humid here in Kyoto.

.

I only wish it will come true soon.  I think this doubtfulness toward the term made me write twice.  I just hoped to express refreshing coolness.  I am not sure I was successful at that, though.

End of the rainy season; several days ago

This year’s very, tediously long rainy season finally ended.

.

Then…the sunshine is too strong and glaring … and I found this haiku on the internet.

.

However, what is more important here is this tanzaku (thin strip of paper for calligraphy) holder was a delightful birthday present from my good old friend from high school days.

Happy encounters at the marché

Happy encounters at the marché

.

Today was the third and last day of the marché and this time was my third participation in it,which was a greatly fruitful experience for me.

.

Firstly, I met a sumié or ink-brush painting artist and had a really meaningful talk.

.

And another oil painting artist who I met here at the marché venue sometime ago through a mysterious, inexplicable coincidence kindly gave me a profound and thought-provoking advice about how I should pursue my calligraphy in the days ahead.

.

Now, I perfectly understand that it is up to me how I could embody his advice and improve the quality of my calligraphy.

.

Now, looking back on the three days of the marché, I renewed my sense of gratitude toward the owner of the gallery for letting me participate in this meaningful event.

Day 2 of the August marché

Today was the second day of the art marché for the month of August.

.

One last day, tomorrow, August 2nd is left.

.

The venue the art gallery Hakuhou-doh is located right in the central part of the cultural district of Kyoto, that is, Okazaki district where you will find the Heian Jingu Shrine and many museums of various genres quite near it.

.

You will enjoy, I am certain, seeing not only the different fields of art displayed at one place but the beautiful cultural district of my hometown if you only come to this marché.

Arrangement for the August marché

I am feeling very happy about the idea of going to the venue of the art marché to arrange my corner.

.

The marché this time will be from July 31 to August 2 at the art gallery Hakuhou-doh.

.

I am going to exhibit this madder colored folding fan with dragonfly and scroll patterns and my calligraphy “autumn breeze”.

Minimalism

What I have been trying to get these several months is “simple life” or “minimalistic way of life”, which is extremely difficult to actually perform at least for me.

.

To realize above goal, I have been trying to do away with many things in my house, including my calligraphic works from my past exhibits.

.

The photo shows, for instance, a small memory of the exhibition I held years ago, which I think, will not be necessary in my present life.

Happy surprise from the past

This simply framed piece that I had completely forgot came out suddenly while I was trying to tidy up my messy house.

.

Then I gradually remembered that I was happy to see these results of my copying practice of my teacher’s works and asked the paperhanger to simply frame them.

.

These are “what is pitiable is like a flower and the moon” and “let us bloom our flowers”.

Tiny, little pleasures

I would like to propose these small items be used to decorate your living room, kitchen, entrance and other places in your house or apartment.

.

These are “gracious rain” and “pleasant, refreshing”.

.

If you get interested in these, please come visit the venue of the next month’s art marché at the art gallery Hakuhou-doh from Friday.

Copying practice

I am fully aware that in this tough period, I should be quietly staying home and single-mindedly practicing calligraphy.

.

However, it is just very difficult to stay focused long.

I actually wanted to buy sunflowers at the flower shop for decoration on the dining table.

.

For, being often associated with the summer season, I thought, sunflowers will help produce a summerly feeling.

However, this is the only “sunflower” I found at the shop.  The tag it carried said it was “a sort of sunflower or a miniature sunflower”.

Such bonne bouche again

A really good, longtime friend came to my house the other day with these wonderful homemade dishes to celebrate my belated birthday.

.

It was a belated birthday feast for her, too.

.

What a fantastic time we spent together enjoying lots of tasty dishes and drinks!

.

I don’t remember how many times I had this “good luck”, as she is such a warm person to her friends.

.

And this time, I think, some people will notice a bottle of upscale saké on the table which was the most notable item among the gifts she brought.

.

I just renewed my sense of great gratitude to her.

“Lotus flowers begin blooming”

.

I thought adding some colors to my calligraphy might be amusing, when suddenly I remembered one of my past post about two years go.

.

It is true that I am feeling a little lonely living alone in a house.  However, more than the loneliness I have been filled with sour-sweet memories of my young days.

Fervent prayer

I really didn’t know the meaning of this phrase when I wrote this.  That is, I thought it was an optative sentence that simply expresses hopes for the future.

.

However, I found out it actually means truly earnest prayers to gods being answered or your wishes being realized because you wished very fervently to deity.

.

In short, I didn’t know it was a present perfect form.

.

Still, it turned out to be someone’s favorite piece.

Long spell of hard rain

The photo shows one phrase from the subdivided solar terms for around the first week of July, which roughly means “heated air is around”.

.

I have always hated the weather like this.  However, talking only about this year, I somewhat yearn for this kind of summerly weather.  For, these days, a series of terrible, huge downpours around the country caused enormous disasters.

.

I only wish the continual rainstorms would come to an end soon.

Looking back

I practiced copying again my first teacher’s model he wrote for me years back.

.

This phrase says “paying no attention to anything” and it is said to express elderly people’s attitude toward things around them.

.

At first, I thought the reason he chose this as a material for his students’ practice was that it precisely expressed how he felt as an elderly teacher.

.

However, as the years went by, I learned that as many as two thousand people belonged to the group of schools he led in many areas of Japan as its peak, which changed my thought.

.

Although I have never been in that kind of position, I can easily imagine how hard it is to manage that large organization.

The most well-known haiku

It is a result of copying practice of my late teacher’s example.

.

This is a haiku written by Matsuo Basho, one of the most representative Japanese haiku poets is probably the most famous haiku in the world.

.

It depicts the sound of a frog leaping in an old pond.

.

As it is written in a plain style portraying a smallest, the most commonplace event, it perversely has produced a vast number of interpretations.

Days of swamp lilies

Today falls on the 11th day from the summer solstice.  The subdivided solar term for this day and five days after that is “swamp lily”.

They say these symbolic seasonal periods suggest what should be done in farming.

I learned while surfing websites that in this case, it indicates rice planting should be done during the period from the summer solstice and this swamp lily day.

Long life

These are my old works which I happened to find while cleaning up my house.  The two letters are simply “long” and “life or to live”.

I don’t remember exactly but I think it was a task for a practice session about ten years ago, when I haven’t given much thought about the phrase but just followed my teacher’s instruction.

.

Now I think “long life” is a very important thing to people concerning what could be accomplished in life.

Finding this photo, I renewed my interest in combining paper and cloth in calligraphic arts.

Day 1 of the postcard collection event

.

The whole venue looked so cute and enjoyable.  Visitors were enjoying seeing the beautiful postcards and other goods.

.

I wrote “May the delight of calligraphy be in your daily lives” on the signboards for my calligraphy.  The phrase was my late teacher’s motto for his life.  And now it is I that has been trying hard to realize the above motto.

.

Also, I think I must write here that I am very grateful to the staffers of the event for displaying the paper fans with my calligraphy so gracefully and beautifully.  It made me realize that I still have a long way to go to learn how to present my calligraphic works.

River in the mountains

River in the mountains

.

It is only the first line of a poem from the ancient China that I found while searching for a material for my calligraphy by a keyword of midsummer.

.

The line roughly means “the river of clear water flows meandering widely just as it holds the village.”

.

When I read this, I remembered the house in the mountains of my distant relatives which is just like this phrase.

.

When I was a child my grandpa and my parents took me there several times.  It was a long trip taking a whole day and I got completely tired when we reached that house where my grandpa was born and raised.

.

These days, the same trip takes much shorter thanks to the newly built tunnels and roads.
