〜Date of the lunar calendar  春の終わり〜

The other day, I wrote that April 3rd marked March 3rd, that is, Double Third Festival Dayfollowing the old calendar this year.  Thus, today, April 30th falls on March 30th according to the lunar calendar.  

Apparently, this date is supposed to be the last day of spring in China.  

The photo shows one passage from a poem meaning “spring ended this morning”.

先日今年はちょうど4月3日が旧暦では上巳の3月3日にあたりますということを書きましたが、それで今日4月30日は旧暦の3月30日ということになります。

そして、3月30日は中国では春の終わりの日とされているそうです。

これはある詩の一節で、「今朝春が終わった」という意味だそうです。

This phrase remained in my mind after listening to a speech by the head monk at a Buddhist temple.  I learned it means, “Someone/something unvarnished.  Someone/something as one (it) is.

Eternal truth.”

〜Sad poem  頭の中で鳴り続ける曲〜

I searched on the net on a flower name, cercis in Chinese 紫荆and reached to this sad poem.

“Awakening from a spring-season dream (analogy of a fleeting life), there was no one I knew/

I only saw the rain falling on the cercis flowers at the edge of the eves in the evening/”

The familiar music that I used to listen so often when I was much younger kept playing in my head.

I sit and …”

ハナズオウの中国語表記（紫荆）を使って調べていたら、寂しい詩が見つかりました。

『春の夢（儚い人生の喩え）から覚めてみたら、知っている人がいなくなっていた

ただ、夕暮れの軒端で、ハナズオウに雨が降り注いでいる』

そして私の頭の中には、若かった日々にあれほど聴いた楽曲が鳴っています。

〜Cluster of small red flowers  燃え上がる恋〜

I find beautiful flowers somewhere…I become happy and take a picture…then, look for its flower language…and use it as a motif for my calligraphy.  These days I found this process so fun and I enjoyed doing this repeatedly.  However, in this case, it wasn’t very amusing.

For, the flower word is such an expected one.

〜Coming straight to my mind  馬酔木〜

I found beautiful Japanese andromeda flowers when I visited the local botanical garden the other day. Then, as always, I looked up the flower languages to happily find out one of them so sweet.

〜Cicadas loud cries  新規性〜

Responding to my request for a favorite character or word, a good friend of mine gave me “蜩 or Tanna japonensis, a kind of cicadas”.  

He apparently quoted this character from the title of his favorite novel.  While I was going over the letter, I found the passage from a poem that is believed to imply there should be lots of criticism when someone tries new methods.

Now I recall I heard an old story from my teacher, which goes; when he had his work framed in a Western style frame several decades ago, people let out a loud chorus of boos saying “it is so outrageous to deal a calligraphic work like a Western style painting!”

However, using Western style frames for calligraphic art is something absolutely normal at present.

何か好きな字とか言葉とかを教えてと頼んだら、ある友人が「蜩」を挙げてくれました。彼の好きな小説の題名から採ったようです。それでこの字を調べていると、この詩の一節が出てきました。

新しい手法を試す人がいると、それを批判するうるさい声が上がるということを暗示しているらしいです。

確かに、私の師が何十年か前に作品を洋額に入れてもらったら、「書を西洋の絵画のように扱うなんて、けしからん！」とブーイングの嵐だったらしいですが、これって今では誰でもしていることです。
