〜It is a haiku on the New Year but …  宝物〜

Although my memory ability has now declined immensely, I used to have a marvelous faculty of memory when young, which made some people really hate me.  Moreover, because of that GOOD memory, I myself had to continue to hate someone for a long spell.  However, I have always treasured my memory faculty and memories themselves all my life. Memories do not need spaces and they do not have shapes and weight, either.  I believe they are as precious as jewels that keep on shining in my heart. 

Although it is a haiku about the New Year, I wrote it because it happened to hold my attention.

今では随分と弱くなってしまいましたが、私は若い頃には人から嫌がられるほどの記憶力がありました。その記憶力の良さのために、誰よりも私自身が誰かを憎み続けるということもありました。けれども、それでも記憶力や思い出は尊いものだと私は生涯信じ続けています。思い出というものは場所もとらなければ、形や重さもありません。それは心の内の小さな宝石のように貴重で大切な存在です。

実はこれは新年の句ですが、ふと目に留まりましたので、書きました。

〜Good-looking boy 実に久しぶり〜

A sales clerk in a store I happened to stop by to do some shopping was a really beautiful young man, which made me very happy.  Now I wonder how long has it been since the last time I got so happy only because of seeing a good-looking boy.

ふと買い物のために立ち寄ったお店の店員さんが、まことに美しい青年だったのでとても嬉しく思いました。ふと出会った若者が綺麗だったからといって、こんなに嬉しく思ったのは久しぶりのことです。

〜Seven kinds 息災に〜

Today is January 7, and I am going to have rice porridge with seven kinds of spring herbs, following a long tradition that is meant to wish for healthy lives.  Apparently, one of the seven kinds is the Japanese parsley I wrote yesterday, however, I can’t tell which one that is out of these in a “seven herbs set” I bought at a grocery store.

It is cold today and it feels like it is getting colder.  The weather forecast says it will get even colder from tomorrow, which I don’t like.

〜Little tree in my garden 満開〜

Exactly eight years ago, when my father passed away, this sasanqua tree in my garden was in full bloom.  The tree itself is much smaller now as I trimmed it considerably, though.

〜Long tradition of bath with yuzu fruits 頂きもの〜

Yet again, kind neighbors gave me some yuzu citrus fruits from the tree in their garden. Now I am looking forward to enjoying the bath on the night of the winter solstice.  Tanka here is my favorite among all my own haikus and tankas.
