〜Season of Chinese lanterns　鬼灯〜

Since my late mother had a terrible sense of direction, these red berries, which are believed to work as Chinese lanterns that light the path for the departed to return, are indispensable.

〜Powerful waves　晩夏の海の波〜

Am I right to understand that “doyō-nami” refers to the big, powerful waves in the ocean around this time of year?  I thought this haiku expresses the power of the ocean waves that are still crashing onto the shore even though summer is drawing to a close.

〜What is life?　花火みたい？〜

This haiku seems to suggest that while life is fleeting, that is precisely why this very moment is beautiful.

In other words, even if a person achieves something, it will not last forever.  However, I think the verse is saying that this does not make life merely hollow, but it is also beautiful

＜人の世は花火のような夢ばかり＞

この句は、人生は儚いけれど、だからこそ、今のこの一瞬が美しいと言っているようにも思われます。

つまり、人が何かを手に入れても、それはいつまでも続くものではない。けれども、それだけに虚しいだけではなくて、美しいものだということを言っているのではないかと思うのです。

〜Cicada chorus haiku　魂の遊び〜

“Chorus of cicadas” is a seasonal word for summer in haiku society.  The phrase describes the chorus of cicadas that seems to pour down from the trees.  For Japanese people, it is a quintessential summer sound, but I have heard that people from abroad often find it difficult to relate to that sensation.

My soul at play/
Amid the cascading chorus of cicadas/
Like violent rain falling all around/

〜Intense shower haiku　三角や四角〜

The cityscape of artificial buildings symbolized with words such as triangles and squares, and a sudden, intense downpour so heavy that it makes the world appear totally white.  I found this was another haiku that shows an interesting contrast.

Triangles and squares/

City’s rooftops and windows/

Then without warning began an intense downpour/

「街並の三角四角白雨来る」

三角や四角といった直線的な建物が象徴する人工的な街並みと、突然に世界が白く見えるほどの急で激しいにわか雨。これも面白い対比の俳句だと思いました。

〜Bank of clouds haiku　可愛い発想〜

Apparently, it is a haiku written by a child.  It says, “I want to pour syrup on those pure white, billowing cumulus clouds and eat them.”  I think that’s a very candid reaction.

Cumulus clouds/

I’d love to eat them/

With some syrup on top/

〜Copying practice of my teacher’s calligraphy　お祥月命日は過ぎましたが〜

Although the anniversary of my calligraphy teacher’s death was nearly a week ago, I still feel like practicing with the examples he left behind.

I think this is a typical summery haiku that not only conveys a sense of living nature but also captures the feeling of enjoying summer; in other words, you feel the sense of openness and innocence like a child.

Stepping into water/

And drying my feet on the grass/

Oh, a summer meadow/

お命日は１週間近く前に過ぎましたが、やはり先生が遺してくださったお手本で稽古します。
