This waka poem, included in the Kojiki, or Japan’s oldest historical record, is considered Japan’s oldest poem and is interpreted as expressing “the joy of living with one’s beloved wife in a home surrounded by many layers of fences in this land of Izumo, which is filled with clouds (symbolizing happiness).”
