〜Solar terms　蓮の花〜

“Lotus flowers are beginning to bloom.”

This is the solar term for about five days starting today.  Lotus flowers are said to be a symbol of seraphic lives in the Pure Land Paradise of the Buddhist philosophy because they grow from dirt and bloom cleanly and peacefully.

「蓮始開」

今日から五日間ほどの七十二候の名称です。つまり、蓮の花が咲きはじめる頃だということで、蓮は泥の中から茎を伸ばし花を咲かせることから、清らかに生きる象徴として、極楽浄土で咲く花だといわれているそうです。

〜Close to an end　芒種も半ば過ぎて〜

According to the solar terms system, the term called Mangzhong that started more than ten days ago is now close to an end.  Here is a passage from an ancient poem about the Mangzhong, which roughly means:  In a waterfront land, after the Mangzhong period wind and rain feel chilly in the season of matured apricots.

〜Seasonal wording　腐草為蛍〜

This is a seasonal phrase for this time of year, which expresses a scene that an imaginal firefly wafts up into the air out of what looked like decayed grass.

Come to think of it, talking about fireflies is now a popular chatting subject among my neighbors.

Small letters show a passage from a very old children’s song of fireflies.

〜Solar term and a haiku　紅花〜

I chose a solar term for five days starting today, “紅花栄”, or safflowers bloom in profusion for my calligraphic work.  Interestingly enough, “紅花” or literally “scarlet flower” is the name of my important friend.  I haven’t had a chance to meet her for a long time unfortunately, though.

How I wish her life be full of good luck and every success in her business!

Here, I also wrote a modern haiku about the flower.

〜Seasonal wordage 款冬華〜

This is the phrase that expresses this time of year meaning “Butterbur sprouts start growing”.  It is especially tasty, I think, when deep fried and is often considered to be a typical taste of spring season.  However, I learned it is seldom eaten outside Japan.  I wrote its flower languages, “anticipation, expectation” and “mate, friend, associate”, as well.  I used willow branches, also a symbol of spring as a decoration in the picture.

この時期の七十二候の名称で、ふきのとうが蕾を出すというような意味のようです。蕗の薹は天ぷらにしたら美味しいし、いかにも春の味覚ですが、海外ではほとんど食べられないとのことです。花言葉も一緒に書いてみました。「待望」と「仲間」です。飾りにしたのは柳の枝で、やはり春の象徴のようなものです。

〜Seasonal phrase 自然界では〜

This is the seasonal wordage of this time of year, literary, “fountain water moves”.  As this is the coldest season, many people would try to avoid going out if possible.  However, in nature, subtle changes are about to happen such as frozen water gets moving.  The phrase also express many people’s wish for the warmer weather should come soon.

今ぐらいの時期の七十二候の名称です。「水泉動」この季節は寒すぎて外出も躊躇うほどですが、自然界では凍っていた泉の水が動き出すなど、見えないけれども繊細な変化が起こっているし、また起こってほしい、つまり早く暖かい季節になってほしいといった願いのこもった言葉だそうです。

The seasonal wording for the first five days of the year is this, “wheat start to sprout under the snow”.   It was really cold around the turn of the year and from time to time, little snow flew.  However, plant lives may be preparing for the spring season.

“Antlers of male elks come off” is the seasonal phrase around this time of year.

At first, I thought it sounded rather gloomy.  However, after learning it is for urging the new ones to grow, I found the phrase pleasantly hopeful.

「麋角解」今ぐらいの七十二候の名称で、大鹿の角が落ちてなくなる、という意味らしく、初めは何かしら暗いなと感じましたが、それは、新たな角が生えやすくなるためのものと分かって、希望に満ちたいい語句だと思いました。
