This is my third post about the fantastic exhibition of bamboo craftworks.

“Flower Mind, Bamboo Capacity”

The term apparently means “flowers are attractive and fascinate people; while bamboo has flexibility since it won’t go against winds’ flows and yet it has an accommodating mind.  Bamboo seems to possess some primordial appeal to Japanese people.

「花意竹情」

花はその魅力で人々を魅了し、竹は風になびくしなやかさを持ちながら、なおも真っ直ぐな心を持っているとのこと。

竹には、何かしら日本人の根本の感情に訴えかける力があるのだと思います。

〜Approaching the end 　少し寂しい気持ち〜

“What I keep thinking of at the end of summer”

This summer has been terribly hot and humid and I really hated it but finally, I am beginning to feel that it is approaching the end.  The sunflower I wrote about the other day came off.  Then, somehow, I can’t help feeling lonely.

暑くて、暑くて、堪らなかった夏ももしかすると終わりに近づいているかもしれません。先日、向日葵を夏の顔として書きましたが、その向日葵のお花がもう落ちてしまいました。何かしら寂しい気持ちになります。

〜Sunflower haiku　夏の顔〜

As the sunflower precisely symbolizes summer, I chose a contemporary haiku of the flower as the motif for my calligraphy. The one in the photo is rather small, though.

Have never seen/

What is darker than a sunflower’s/

〜Old temple bell　暑さ、和らぐように〜

As this severe heat never seemed to end, I looked for a passage with a call and refreshing atmosphere.

It apparently depicts a scene of a person walking on a deserted footpath along a mountain stream, hearing the sound of an old temple bell from faraway dense fog.

暑さが止まりそうもありませんので、せめて涼しげな題材をと思いました。

谷川に沿って延びる人気のない寒々とした小道を歩いていると、深く立ちこめた雲の彼方から古寺の鐘の音が響いてくるという情景を表現した一節らしいです。

〜Blueberries　爽やかサラダ〜

A kind neighbor gave me fresh blueberries from her garden, which I put in salad and enjoyed.  As I usually cook simple, unsophisticated simmered dishes, the salad tasted even fresher.

Nothing new at all/

But I put an extra-large portion of salad/

ご近所さんがお庭で採れた新鮮なブルーベリーをくださいましたので、サラダに入れていただきました。普段は簡単な煮物のようなものを作ることが多いので、その意味でも新鮮でした。

〜Solar terms 　蒙霧升降〜

This is the solar term for about five days starting today which means “Dense fog rises”.  However, I have no actual feeling about this.  I just wonder if fogs occur at this time of year.

〜Name by color　赤、白、黄色〜

I often think of yellow flowers when I hear the name of the flower, “portulaca” or “rose moss”.  One of my longtime good friends kindly gave me an image of red and white flowers of that kind.  So, I searched for their flower languages and found “innocence” and “perseverance”, respectively.

松葉牡丹と言えば、黄色のお花を思い浮かべますが、赤と白のお花の画像をいただきました。

そこで、色別の花言葉を調べると、それぞれ「無邪気」と「忍耐」でした。

〜Time to say good-by　送り火〜

In Kyoto, the traditional ceremonial bonfire will be observed this evening to see off the souls of the dead who were back in this world during these bon period days.

This modern haiku may just reflect my feelings, though.

O the farewell bonfire/

Seems they don’t want to leave/

Father and mother/

〜Exhibition of bamboo lanterns, pt. 2　続・優しい灯り〜

I wrote about an exhibition of bamboo scrimshaws yesterday.  It was last week I actually went there to see my good friend’s work, however, its impression as a wonderful exhibition of amazing works.

An extraordinary world was successfully formed out of the bamboo of different fashions and attractivity from woods as the basic subject matter; and the artists’ tastes, years of experience, and fabulous crafts.

The clouds look like autumn itself/

As they are combed/

By the bamboo forest/

昨日、竹あかり展について書きました。友人の作品を見るために実際にそこに行ったのは先週のことでしたが、今思い出しても、これは見事な作品の展示だったと思います。竹という木とは異なる風合いや魅力を持つ素材とそこに加えられたアーチスト達のセンス、長年の経験、驚くべき技術などが、非日常とも思える世界を形作っていました。
