〜Kyoto Gyoen National Garden　大きな公園〜

Because the Kyoto Gyoen National Garden is located near my house and my alma mater it has been a very familiar place to me.  However, I haven’t been there often lately.  It is, I am sure, a big and amazing park for both Kyoto people and sightseers.  Soon, the cherry blossoms will be gorgeous.

〜Solar term　菜虫化蝶〜

This is the solar term for about five days starting today, meaning it is the time of year when young worms of cabbage white spectacularly transform into butterflies after a spending winter.  I haven’t seen that kind of caterpillar yet, though.

〜Fifth practice session the day before yesterday　雨の日のお稽古〜

I have practiced as “experience practice” with people from Western countries a number of times so far.  It was the fifth time for this person, which made me feel very happy and honored.  As it was a rainy day, the phrase we practiced, “gracious rain”, happened to fit the day.

これまでに何度も、体験の形で西欧の諸国からいらっしゃった方々のお稽古のお相手をしましたが、この方は、おとといで５回も来てくださって、とてもありがたいし、光栄なことだと思います。おとといはしっかり雨模様で、お稽古の内容は偶然タイミングが良かったのでした。

〜New kind of cute flowers　どこにいたのかしら〜

I often find flowers that I have never seen before at the florist corner of the supermarket I frequent.

This time, I found a cute one called “Astrantia”.  And the flower languages are “thirstiness for love”, “Intellect” and “wish upon a star”.  Also, I learned the image of the word, “thirstiness for love” doesn’t mean sadness about lacking love but some kind of hope for love.

よく行くスーパーの花屋さんコーナーでは、これまで知らなかったお花をよく見ます。

今回は、アストランティアという可愛いお花が目につきました。花言葉は、「愛の渇き」「知性」「星に願いを」などで、「愛の渇き」という花言葉は、愛が無くて悲しい意味ではなく、愛を求める希望がイメージされているそうです。

〜Special practice session　若くて多才〜

A young, pretty woman from my distant relatives came to my house to try a calligraphy lesson.  I thought she would produce exciting pieces, as I saw some sophisticated drawings when I visited her house.  However, she seemed very nervous and didn’t take the plunge and express her originality.  Still, she is blessed with a variety of talents.

遠縁の、若くて綺麗な女性がお稽古に来てくれました。お宅に伺ったときに、センスのいい線描画を見ていたので、きっと面白いお作品を書かれるだろうと思っていましたが、緊張して存分に個性を発揮してもらえなかったように思います。とは言え、さまざまな才能のある方です。

〜Interesting haiku　鬼が泣く〜

This cold weather has lingering effects, and we have had a lot of rain for this season.  It doesn’t seem to be spring-like weather soon.  I found this interesting contemporary haiku.

O spring breeze/

〜Solar term　桃始笑〜

This is a solar term for around five days starting today, which means “Peach buds start to swell and open little by little”.  “Flowers smile” means flowers bloom, and in the haiku society, “mountains smile” is one of the seasonal words for spring, which means trees and plants in the mountains start budding.  I think both are colorific expressions.

今日から5日間ほどの七十二候で、桃のつぼみがほころび、花が咲き始める頃との意味です。花が咲くことを「花が笑う」と表現し、春の季語の「山笑う」は芽吹き始めた山の形容を形容する言葉で、どちらも華やかな表現だと思います。

〜Pink tulips　春の代表〜

The cute-looking flower “tulip” attracts people’s attention at the florists, especially in this season.

My calligraphy here has two parts: the pale ink in the background depicts “pink color” and “tulip” in Chinese; while I wrote a modern haiku on this kind of flower with dark ink.

〜Chinese-style steamer　TVで見て〜

I bought a small Chinese-style steamer after seeing them introduced on TV.   Then, I found out it was easy to use and it made ingredients tasty, so I use it quite often these days.
