Someone who knows my love of calligraphy very kindly sent me an excellent textbook.  However, I was a little shocked when I saw its wrapper.  For, its design is a well-known classic that many people practice copying, which I myself am very fond of, and 7 or 8 years ago, I often practiced it, but I have been quite lazy lately.  I felt like someone oversaw how I practiced and wanted me to be more diligent.

When I was much younger and taking tea ceremony lessons, I was really happy to get to have this sweet on the first practice of the year.  Much later, I learned it was originally a special dessert for the New Year in the imperial court.

Laughing Gate, Happiness Congregates.

The term consists of four characters from a proverb that means happiness comes to homes with constant laughter.   Somehow, it often seems to appear during the New Year period.  I think the term is good all year round.

“New Year” naturally makes me think of my future, but I am really poor at thinking of the future.  When I taught at an English language school for children, I was very good at making a teaching plan for each lesson. However, it was almost impossible for me to think of how I would like the whole class to be at the end of the school year.

The clouds often are likened to happiness.  However, I didn’t understand what caused this imagination until I saw clouds from the plane window on my way to a faraway foreign land last fall.  Clouds look like they outwell one after another, which may make people think and hope the clouds are like outwelling happiness.
