〜Joy of the dragons  梅雨〜

As we are in the midst of rainy season, here is an ancient Chinese poem whose very title is “Rainy season”.  The poem says dragons and creatures such as serpents are very happy with rainy weather.

〜Passage from an old poem　もう夏だ！〜

Even though it is still the last day of May, utterly hot it is!

“If it is this hot even in May, what would happen when December comes?” is a common story in 漫才 or Japanese stand-up comedy performed usually by two people.

The photo shows one passage from an ancient Chinese poem depicting a hot summer day; it roughly says waking up from a nap lying on the ground in shade, the poet found the sun right above him and heard a singing of a bush warbler.

まだ5月の末だというのに、真夏の暑さ。

5月で既にこの暑さだったら、12月になったらどうなるのかしら？　というのはよくある漫才ネタ。

写真は、真夏のお昼間に木陰の地べたで昼寝をしていて、夢から覚めたら太陽は真上にあって、鶯が一声鳴いたという詩の一節です。

I searched for some words that depict early summer scene and found this one.  Apparently, it means “Both heaven and earth are swept and cleansed to the utmost limit by willow wands”.

〜Roses in garden  少し癖のある香り〜

〜“Tulip” in Chinese language　美酒〜

First, I looked for a Chinese word for “tulip”.  Then I searched for a Chinese poem including this word to find this poem about tasty alcoholic drinks.  Repeated searching sometimes takes you to an unexpected place.

〜Hint of spring 　紅いの、白いの〜

These days, at last, we are beginning to feel the spring season approaching.  Here and there, we see Japanese plum blossoms of both red ones and white ones opening little by little.

I learned this old Chinese poem says “red blossoms of ume, Japanese plum trees, don’t seem to be willing to fully open yet but the buds are swelling.  So, I am checking the branches on the southern side”.

ようやく少しずつ春を感じるころとなりました。あちらこちらで紅梅、白梅が開いているのが見られます。

この詩では、紅梅がまだまだ満開にはなっていないけれども、蕾は膨らんできているので、南側の枝を見てみようと言っているらしいです。

〜Snow and pine tree 大雪〜

Looking at the pretty heavy snowfall today, I thought I would write a Chinese poem on snow.  I searched and found this one.  It roughly depicts “Although heavy snowfall pressurizes green pine trees, they keep standing straight.  We should learn and follow their examples and patiently wait for the time of melting snow.”  Nevertheless, it is certainly cold and my fingers feel so cold.

The photos don’t show pine trees.  The pine tree I remember now is the one that used to be in the garden of my mother’s parents’ house that my grandpa was really proud of.

雪がたくさん積もりましたので、そんな漢詩を探しました。「雪が青い松を圧しているようだが、松はそのままに真っ直ぐ。その高潔さを見習って雪解けの時を待つべきだ」とのこと。でも、実際寒いし、指先が冷たいのです。

写真には松の木は写っていません。今思い出すのは、母の実家にあった大きな松の木で、祖父が大事にしていたものです。

〜Season of the fruits　今年もいただきました〜

Around this time last year, my neighbors were picking citrus Junos fruits from a tree loaded with so many yellow fruits in their garden and they kindly gave me some. 

This photo shows the fruit they gave me yesterday again from their garden and my calligraphic work of an ancient Chinese poem by a famous poet, Du Fu, in which the character of this kind of fruit appears.

昨年の今頃、ご近所さんが、お庭のたわわに実った木からたくさん収穫しておられた柚子をいくつか分けてくださいました。

〜Autumnal scene 美の競演〜

This is a passage from an old-time Chinese poem about chrysanthemums’ fragrance. Apparently, it expresses moon lit chrysanthemums, insects’ chirping, chrysanthemums’ fragrance, namely, a variety of autumnal beauties competing with one another.

古い中国の詩の一部です。月光に照らされた菊花、虫の声、菊の香りなど秋の美しさの競演のようだという意味らしいです。
