I searched for a Zen phrase suited to July and found this one. It apparently means draining the water of a great river to the dregs or, furthermore, drinking up the whole universe. In other words, it is supposed to mean you must absorb everything in the cosmos and eventually be non-being rather than stay in a half-hearted attitude.

7月に相応しい禅語を探したら、これが見つかりました。大河の水を一口で飲み尽くすとか、それどころか、宇宙全体を飲み尽くすという境涯とか。つまり生半可な状態に停まらず余すことなく一切を吸収し無になれという意味のようです。

Today falls on “hangesho” or 半夏生 this year, which is usually July 2nd. The day used to be allocated on the 11th day counting from the summer solstice, but now it is decided on the day when the sun passes the point of 100 degrees of celestial longitude on the celestial sphere.

Because the end of June means a half-year has passed, this traditional dessert, which is half a square, symbolizes this timing. I think this is an interesting idea. What is also interesting is the name itself, 水無月, is the old name of the month, June.

I went to see a documentary film on a late musician that one music critic commented was “a drift of geniuses”.
Then, I searched the net with the keywords of “purple” and “rain”, and found a tanka by a well-known poet.
I don’t think this poem is connected to the musician, but I felt like writing it somehow.

“Graceful rain, happy rain, quietness after the rain”
This is my favorite motif for calligraphy, which I have written several times. I am both a “rain woman” and a pluviophile. However, I would only want a quiet rain that would softly embrace the whole world but not a disastrously hard rain.
