My friend in a faraway country which I visited for the first time in six years gave me a lot of ballpoint pens as gifts. You will find things in a somewhat different design when you are in a different place. However, its Chinese expression, “pen with a ball at the end” is just the same as the English word “ballpoint pen”, which I found very intriguing.

6年ぶりに訪れた遠い国の友人が、ボールペンをたくさんプレゼントしてくれました。ところ変われば、少し違うデザインも見受けられるようです。が、ボールペンの中国語表記を見ると、ペン先に丸い玉が付いているということで、英語のballpoint penと同じなのが面白いと思いました。

I chose this phrase as a motif for my calligraphy work from a website about Zen words. I learned the passage says that falling flowers, flowing water, moving clouds and sound of flutes don’t adhere to anything; they just come and disappear without leaving any traces.

The seasonal phrase for the latter half of March is this, “sparrows start building nests”. Because I live quite near Tadasunomori, every morning I hear lots of birds chirping and singing. Birds have always been familiar to me. And suddenly I had this idea that this deserves to be celebrated. That is why I took the photo of my work with a glass with some Japanese saké.
