A little while ago, I visited a calligraphy exhibition specialized in kana or Japanese phonetic characters and there I received a gift of Japanese pickled vegetables, which made me really happy because I love them so much.

〜How spring behaves　遅い〜

We have experienced hints of spring’s warm air a number of times.  Still actually, warm weather doesn’t seem to arrive soon.  In fact, I was surprised or even shocked to see a fair amout of snow when getting up this morning.

〜In Chinese　巧克力〜

Sometimes Chinese descriptions of various words are interesting.  I checked the Chinese expression of the word, chocolate and found this one.  It obviously reflects its phonetic feature.

I remembered that sometime ago, when I heard the British rock band, YES is called 是樂隊, or “affirmative band” and thought it was totally a literal translation.

いろいろの語の中国語表記が面白いので、チョコレートの中国語表記を調べました。これは発音を写したものらしいです。

いつぞや、ブリティッシュロックのバンドYESが中国では是樂隊と呼ばれていると聞いて、そのままやんと思ったことを思い出しました。

〜Special Chinese character　母を思うとき〜

My late mother’s name has a letter 絹 or silk.  This character always gives me warm feelings as it brings happy memories back.

〜Summer days　いい思い出〜

In my childhood, my cousins came to us and stayed for days in summer breaks, which is a very happy memory.

However, now thinking back of the days, I am certain the scenes of my cousins and I playing together was the greatest entertainment to my late mother.

幼い頃、夏休みには従姉妹たちが泊まりがけで遊びにきていました。楽しくて良い思い出です。

〜One calligraphy exhibition　柔らかくて美しい〜

This is my third time of visiting this calligraphy exhibition specialized in calligraphy of kana, or Japanese phonetic letters.  Although I know this is a conceited comment, I am certain its level has kept rising.  So, I was really looking forward to visiting its next exhibit. However, to my great disappointment, I heard this time would be the last.

Now, I do hope calligraphers assembled here will organize a new group and organize a new exhibition series.

この仮名の書展を見学させていただくのは、これで3回目になります。生意気な発言ですが、どんどん見応えが出てきます。それで次が楽しみと思っていたのに、残念なことにこれが最終回なのだそうです。

そういうことなら、ここに出展されている書家さんたちが新しい会を結成して、新しい展覧会を開かれるのを楽しみにしたいと思います。

〜Origin is the ancient China　蓬莱飾り〜

I saw this beautiful ornament at a gathering of senior citizens association in the community.  I was told it was a little late to display it because it was for the New Year, however, the garnish was really intriguing.  The plant, I heard, was Lycopodium clavatum and I was surprised to find its texture was much softer than it looked.

地域の老人会の集まりでこの綺麗な蓬莱飾りを見ました。お正月用の飾りなので、少々時期は遅いようですが、とても面白いものだと思いました。これは日陰鬘とのことで、触ってみると、見た目よりもずっと柔らかでした。
