〜Bamboo leaves as toys　笹舟流そう〜

I remember picking bamboo leaves, making them boat-shaped, and throwing them into a nearby small river to race with neighborhood kids when growing up.

This children’s play is seldom seen these days.

Kids competed racing with their boat-shaped bamboo leaves/

Grown-up young ayu sweetfish ascend streams/

幼い日、近所の友だちと家の近くで笹の葉を摘んで、笹舟にして近くの小川で流して遊んだのを覚えています。

It apparently means “Sceneries in spring change day by day”.  Because I like the character “光” I often try to find phrases containing this letter and write them.

〜Fragrant flowers　花屋さんで〜

Here are the flowers you see frequently at flower shops this season.

Long ago, a princess of a country and the prince of their enemy country fell in love.  In the meantime, however, the princess’s father got to know their relationship, and the princess couldn’t leave the castle anymore.  Then, the prince threw a rope into the castle roof at night so the princess could go down using it, and they met secretly.

However, one time, the rope was cut, and the princess died.  God watched the scene, felt sorry, and changed the princess into the flower of Matthiola incana.

花屋さんでこの季節によく見かけるお花です。

昔、ある国の姫君が敵国の王子と恋に落ちました。しかし、二人の関係が姫君の父親に知られてしまい、姫はお城から出られなくなってしまったのです。そこで、王子は夜中になると城の屋上に綱を投げ入れ、姫が綱を使って降りてくることで密かに会うことにしたのです。

しかし、ある時綱が切れて姫君は亡くなってしまいました。それをみた神さまは哀れみ、姫君を紫羅蘭花の花に変えたのでした。

〜Sound of a pipe organ　荘厳さの中で〜

I remembered the sublime sound of a pipe organ I heard in an old cathedral in an old overseas city last fall.  Thus, here are Chinese translation of the word “pipe organ” and a modern haiku about the instrument.

〜Spring shower　季節は違えど〜

The word 時雨 means light showers in late autumn or early winter.  However, I recently learned another similar word, 春時雨, or light showers in spring, which can cause a really delicate sensation, I thought.

I found a bonsai of white ume tree on the premises of a temple near my house that is dedicated to Sarasvati.

Barely noticeable as white ume blossoms/

And the evening sunlight/

That is growing colorful/

〜Heart of the Scorpion　天体ショー〜

I heard that early this morning, there was a lunar occultation of the Antares; in other words, a phenomenon that the moon hides the first-magnitude star of the Scorpions, also known as “the heart of the Scorpion”.  Then, I wrote “The Antares” in Chinese because I had a groovy image of the phenomenon.  A specific image didn’t come to my mind, though.  They say the same phenomenon will happen in June this year.

今日早朝アンタレス食、つまり月が蠍座の1等星アンタレス、別名「蠍座の心臓」を隠す恒星食が起こる日だと聞き、具体的なイメージは湧きませんが、何かしら素敵だと思い、アンタレスの中国語表記を書きました。今年は同じ現象が6月にも起こるそうです。

〜Water harp in springtime　春が始まる〜

Today marks the first day of spring.  With a somewhat happy feeling, I searched the net and found this modern haiku of the spring season about water harps.  A Suikinkutsu or a water harp placed under the earth that creates clear sounds for good is fantastic.

It is the beginning of the spring season/

Even the sound of Suikinkutsu/

Became colorific/

As today marks the close of winter, the tradition on this day of scattering beans to drive evil spirits away comes to my mind.  Just like this modern haiku, my father survived his father.

Survived my father/

I scatter the roasted soybeans/

To drive demons away/
