〜Another contemporary haiku　さて、10月〜

Because the month of October started, I chose a modern haiku on this month as a motif for my calligraphy.  It is such a simple approach, though.

〜What I can do for my late mother　愛した人〜

Sometime ago, at a calligraphy exhibition I saw a piece composed with the initial letters of a mother’s name and those of her daughter placed at the head of the lines.  I tried the same thing, and asked it to be framed as a panel.

And this is the very main theme of the exhibition I have been preparing since my mother passed away.

〜Little red bird　懐かしい歌〜

Occasionally I choose the words from children’s songs in old times as motifs for my calligraphic works.  For, they make me feel nostalgic and warm my heart.  This song of “Little red bird” was my favorite when I was little, however, I didn’t realize it was based on a poem by the famous poet, Kitahara Hakushū.

Little, red bird.

Why, oh, why is it red, I wonder.

It ate red fruits, that’s why.

〜Pure love　納得です〜

Lovely white dendrobium flowers caught my attention at a flower shop.  I checked the flower language and found it was “pure love” which I found just convincing.

〜Letter for “field mustard”　食用の植物〜

As people familiar with the Chinese characters know very well, this letter, “菜” originally refers to edible plants, namely vegetables, and particularly “field mustard”.  Apparently, its meaning expands to “cooked dishes using vegetables”.  

And one more thing, it is often preferred to be used in girls’ names, maybe because the little yellow flowers of field mustard give a cheerful, lively image, I think.

これはご存知のように、元来食用植物一般を指す字で、とくに菜の花を意味することが多くあります。しかもそこから「おかず」の意味にもなります。

〜Autumnal Equinox Day　寂しい詩〜

Because today falls on the Autumnal Equinox Day, I searched a Chinese poem for my calligraphic work with this as a keyword and found this one.  Apparently, the poet, Bai Juyi, wrote it in the year his mother passed away.  No wonder it is a sad poem.

Standing alone in the twilight before the hall that enshrines a Buddha statue 

Seeing the fallen Styphnolobium flowers all over the ground
Hearing cicadas chorus filled among the trees

.
