〜Part of the offerings　鬼灯の謎〜

Among the various offerings at the family altar for the Bon Festival, Chinese lantern fruits are included.  I have heard the reason is that they work as lanterns to show the way home for the spirits of the deceased.  So, I put a lot of Chinese lantern fruits at my entrance and at the family altar during the Bon Festival period right after my mother left, for she had a terrible sense of direction.

お盆のお供えの中には鬼灯がありますが、これは死者の魂がこの世に還ってくるための提灯の役割を果たすからだと聞きましたので、母が亡くなった直後のお盆には、玄関とお仏壇に鬼灯をどっさり飾りました。亡母は大変な方向音痴でしたので。

〜Solar term　寒蝉鳴〜

This is the solar term allocated to five days starting today, meaning “cry of evening cicadas”.  Although this is a kind of cicada, its cries sound a little sad.  When we get to hear it in the evening, I feel somewhat relieved, thinking that this long summer will finally come to an end soon.  I guess that is the reason it has that name, evening cicada.

Shibuya Yoichi passed away last month after a nearly two-year battle with illness.  I was his enthusiastic fan for about 50 years. I thought I would never see him in the public eye again, however, I never expected he would leave this world so soon.

Rock music resides inside its listeners.

先月、2年近く闘病中だった渋谷陽一さんが亡くなりました。もう表舞台に立たれることはないとは思っていましたが、まさかこんなに早くに逝ってしまわれるとは思っていませんでした。

〜Upcycling the unwanted bread 　いただき物〜

They say they upcycled the scraps of bread, which is one kind of French bread called “batard”, that were to be discarded, into beer.

I only enjoyed this fantastic gift from someone.

The haiku I happened to find is a haiku of late spring, though.

〜Kanji for Japanese traditional monsters　漢字の面白さ〜

A longtime friend invited me to visit the Japan Kanji Museum & Library https://www.kanjimuseum.kyoto .  It was our second time to go there, and the current exhibition’s theme is Kanji for monsters and demons https://www.kanjimuseum.kyoto/special/yokai-kanji-chimi-moryo/index.html, which was really amusing and fascinating.
