〜Haiku and copying practice 秋の雲〜

This isn’t my original work but one result of my copying practice of my teacher’s calligraphy.  The other photo shows the sky in Kyoto yesterday and I thought this haiku is about this season.

〜Deep blue　 続報〜

The other day, I received a reply from one of my best friends that she likes 楓 maple to a request to my readers for their favorite character or word.  She again told me that she likes the color blue and the letters for deep blue, 紺碧.

〜Seasonal wordage 蟋蟀在戸〜

The seasonal phrase of this time of year is this, apparently, it means “grasshopper at your door stridulates.”  At first, I thought only the idea was too good and the whole work was a failure.  However, looking at it again, I thought calligraphy wasn’t that bad, although making out each letter is difficult.  And so, I decided to post this one.

この時期の七十二候の名称です。キリギリスが戸にあって鳴く、だそうです。ちょっとアイデア倒れだったかしらとも思いましたが、読みにくいけれども字はそんなに悪くないと思って投稿することにしました。

〜Someone’s favorite letter 橋は、架け橋〜

In response to my request to tell me your favorite character or phrase, someone gave me “bridge”, 橋.  He says (1) it is really pleasant to drive across a big bridge on a sunny day, (2) their sideway views are beautiful and above all else (3) they are interesting symbols of connecting two different worlds.

〜Evening stroll 秋の想い〜

“On quiet fall evenings, the poet strolls around thinking of his lover.  And he recites poems to the cool heavens.”  I found the scene enchanting.

〜Behold! これほどの字は〜

I asked my paperhanger to line the models my teacher gave me more than forty years ago in order to save them from decaying.  I don’t think many people possess something as valuable as these.  To show the size of the paper, I put my new cushion at the center, it is not a pincushion.

40年以上前に先生からいただいたお手本を裏打ちしてもらいました。ボロボロになっては困りますので。これほどの物を持っている人はそれほどいないと思います。手本の紙の大きさをわかってもらうために、中央に新しいクッションを置きました。これは針山ではありません。

〜Little bit of a mystery そういう季節だから？〜

It has been a few days since I began asking my readers to tell me their favorite character(s) or phrase(s) so I can write it (them) with a brush, that is, in a calligraphic style.  Then I began thinking if someone made the same question to me, what would I answer.  And then, pretty vaguely I was thinking of this letter, 楓 “maple” because it is about the time the leaves will turn beautiful red or orange.   It was just at that time, I received a message from a very good friend of mine, saying she likes a Japanese rock band, their song called 楓 and this letter 楓 itself.  I was so thrilled my body trembled a little.  Was it because the season led both of us to have the same idea or was there something more?

先日から、お好きな字や言葉を教えてくださいとお願いしていますが、ふと、誰かにそれを聞かれたら？　と考えていました。それで思いついたのは「楓」。これから綺麗に色づく季節を迎える「楓」。とぼんやり考えているときに、大事な友人から、ある日本のロックバンドが好きで、彼らの「楓」という曲が好きだし、この「楓」という字そのものも好きだから、この字を書いて欲しいとのメールを受信しました。ちょっと身震いしました。単にそういう季節だから同じことを考えたと言ってしまえばそれだけのことですが。

〜Floating mum petals 重陽の節句とおじさんの気持ち〜

Today falls on September 9th in the old calendar, Double Ninth Festival.  I wrote a short poem by Li Bai on this event, namely, people drinking and dancing.  An interpretation on this poem goes, “In China there was a tradition that going up a hill and drinking saké with floating chrysanthemum petals could drive away evil spirits.  As the poet had just been ousted from the capital around that time, you can feel his disappointment from the poem.  However, at the same time, his mettle of “going my way” can be felt, as well.”

今日は旧暦の九月九日、つまり重陽の節句にあたりますので、この日についての李白の短い詩を書きました。ある解説では、「中国ではこの日に小高い丘に登って菊酒を飲むと邪気払いになるという伝説があるが、ちょうどこの頃作者は都を追われ、この詩からは失意の様子が伺われるが、また同時に、『我が道を行く』という気概も感じられる」とのことです。

〜Joy 好きな言葉〜

In my post yesterday, I asked my readers to tell me their favorite letters or phrases, and one of my precious friends mentioned “joy”.  Her life apparently has been tough, however, all the more, she requested me to write “joy”.  I found her very courageous.

〜Seasonal phrase 鴻雁来

The seasonal wording for this time of year is this “flights of geese begin to come flying”.  And again, to my regret, I just don’t know which birds are geese, although in the forest by my house many kinds of birds must live all year around or at some point of year.
