〜Solar terms　蓮の花〜

“Lotus flowers are beginning to bloom.”

This is the solar term for about five days starting today.  Lotus flowers are said to be a symbol of seraphic lives in the Pure Land Paradise of the Buddhist philosophy because they grow from dirt and bloom cleanly and peacefully.

「蓮始開」

今日から五日間ほどの七十二候の名称です。つまり、蓮の花が咲きはじめる頃だということで、蓮は泥の中から茎を伸ばし花を咲かせることから、清らかに生きる象徴として、極楽浄土で咲く花だといわれているそうです。

〜Seasonal wording　腐草為蛍〜

This is a seasonal phrase for this time of year, which expresses a scene that an imaginal firefly wafts up into the air out of what looked like decayed grass.

Come to think of it, talking about fireflies is now a popular chatting subject among my neighbors.

Small letters show a passage from a very old children’s song of fireflies.

この時期の七十二候の名称で、腐った草のようなところから、成虫になった蛍がふわりと飛び立つ様子を表しています。そう言えば、このところご近所の人たちの話題は蛍のことが多いです。

〜Awakening of the hibernating insects　啓蟄〜

Today falls on the first day of Jingzhe period or the time of hibernating insects emerge from underground, according to the solar terms system.

Thus, I wrote an old Chinese poem and a haiku associated with this time of year. 

The Chinese poem depicts something like;

Spring wind would not blow away my sorrow/

Longer days irritate me by causing deeper grief/

In the bottom of my heart/

The haiku expresses a laid-back spring day that the poet spends walking around at leisure just as following clouds.

今日は二十四節気の啓蟄にあたります。それで、この日にちなんだ漢詩と俳句を書きました。

それで漢詩は、

春風は私の愁いを吹き去ろうとはしてくれず、

長い春の日は憎らしくも、

私の心に深い嘆きを起こさせるばかり；

というような意味のようです。

〜Seasonal phrase　朔風払葉〜

“North wind sweeps the leaves away”.  This is the seasonal phrase for this time of year. Surely, it has become cold suddenly today.  And the fallen leaves fluttering on the ground look cold.

「北風が葉を払う」今ぐらいの七十二候の名称です。確かに今日から急に寒くなった気がします。そして地面を舞う落ち葉は寒々しいものです。

〜Day of extreme heat 　暑いと思ったら〜

It has been so very hot since early morning, and I found out today falls on Dashu (solar term), literally, great heat, which means today is the day of extreme heat according to solar term.

朝からずいぶん暑いと思ったら、今日は二十四節気の大暑のようです。
