On my last trip, I participated in a one-day tour, which turned out to be a delightful one.  That was because the local guide was joyfully talkative and entertaining.  She showed the amazing ruins and other places in Japanese that we thought she had seriously learned.  We instantly knew that she was earnest about her job and very kind.
