On a winter day a little before my second-grade year, two of my classmates suddenly came to my house and said, “We decided to take up calligraphy lessons. Do you want to come to the calligraphy school with us?” Then I asked my mother who instantly became so happy with the idea, and I started going to the calligraphy school nearby with them. After that, the two girls soon quit, but I have been practicing calligraphy for about 60 years.
Actually, they weren’t very close friends to me, and I can’t recall their names, faces or anything at all now.
These days, I have thought that maybe they were foxes or raccoon dogs living in the forest called Tadasuno Mori at the back of my house.

もうすぐ2年生（小学校の）という冬のある日、級友が二人突然うちに来て、「私らお習字のお稽古することにしてん。一緒に行かへん？」と言ってくれました。母に聞くと、一も二もなく大賛成で、すぐに彼女たちと一緒に近所のお習字教室に通うようになりました。そして、彼女たちはすぐに止めてしまいましたが、私はそれから約60年、ずっと書を続けています。
ただ、この二人とは大して親しくもありませんでしたし、今となっては名前も顔も何も思い出せません。
あの二人はもしかすると、うちの裏の糺の森にいる狐か狸だったのかも知れないとこの頃考えています。
