〜Do you like butterflies?　怖いかも知れない〜

In my elementary school, there was one girl who said she was afraid of butterflies.  She actually ran about screaming when butterflies came near.  In those days, I didn’t understand why she was so afraid of the insects.  But later, I myself sometimes felt scared to see them fly about.

Will join the butterfly group/

小学校に、蝶々が怖いと言っていた子がいました。本当に、蝶々が飛んで来ると、キャアキャア言って逃げ回っていました。私はそのときには、そんなに怖がる理由が分かりませんでしたが、その後、蝶々の飛んでいる姿って気味が悪いと思うこともありました。

〜Sad poem  頭の中で鳴り続ける曲〜

I searched on the net on a flower name, cercis in Chinese 紫荆and reached to this sad poem.

“Awakening from a spring-season dream (analogy of a fleeting life), there was no one I knew/

I only saw the rain falling on the cercis flowers at the edge of the eves in the evening/”

The familiar music that I used to listen so often when I was much younger kept playing in my head.

I sit and …”

ハナズオウの中国語表記（紫荆）を使って調べていたら、寂しい詩が見つかりました。

『春の夢（儚い人生の喩え）から覚めてみたら、知っている人がいなくなっていた

ただ、夕暮れの軒端で、ハナズオウに雨が降り注いでいる』

そして私の頭の中には、若かった日々にあれほど聴いた楽曲が鳴っています。

〜Around this time of year　土筆摘み〜

Yesterday I paid a formal visit to my late mother’s family grave.  Then I remembered my grandfather often took me as a child to the fields for picking horsetails around this time of year.  However, I can’t recall how he cooked the horsetails we brought back home and fed me.

〜Good old memory  自信と努力〜

I am not sure why this happened but somehow, this phrase suddenly came into my mind, that is, “self-assurance and endeavor”.  

One day, one of the homeroom teachers at my elementary school gave each pupil a word or a phrase.  It was this “self-assurance and endeavor” that he presented to me.

どういうものか、ふと思い出したのが、この「自信と努力」です。小学校の担任の先生のお一人がクラスの皆それぞれに「言葉」をくださったことがあり、私がいただいたのが、「自信と努力」でした。

〜It is a haiku on the New Year but …  宝物〜

Although my memory ability has now declined immensely, I used to have a marvelous faculty of memory when young, which made some people really hate me.  Moreover, because of that GOOD memory, I myself had to continue to hate someone for a long spell.  However, I have always treasured my memory faculty and memories themselves all my life. Memories do not need spaces and they do not have shapes and weight, either.  I believe they are as precious as jewels that keep on shining in my heart. 

Although it is a haiku about the New Year, I wrote it because it happened to hold my attention.

今では随分と弱くなってしまいましたが、私は若い頃には人から嫌がられるほどの記憶力がありました。その記憶力の良さのために、誰よりも私自身が誰かを憎み続けるということもありました。けれども、それでも記憶力や思い出は尊いものだと私は生涯信じ続けています。思い出というものは場所もとらなければ、形や重さもありません。それは心の内の小さな宝石のように貴重で大切な存在です。

実はこれは新年の句ですが、ふと目に留まりましたので、書きました。

〜Beautiful memories 異国の友へ〜

In November 2017, I was fortunate to enjoy the most treasurable opportunity to participate in a group exhibition of calligraphy in Poland.  And a lady I met there for the first time is a remarkably respectable teacher and has supported my activity as a calligrapher ever since.  The photo shows my work based on her request, “memory”.

〜Something from the past　どこが良いと・・・〜

The other day I wrote about my old works I happened to find.  The photo shows one of the others.  The pieces I wrote last time was kana (system of characters invented in Japan based on Chinese characters) works while this one is kanji (Chinese characters) piece.  And another thing about is it seems I had it lined.  What I liked about it, I wonder?

〜Black birds leave 七十二候〜

This is the seasonal phrase for this time of the year.  “Black birds” here mean house swallows and the whole phrase means house swallows leave for the south in fall.  According to a folklore, swallows have always been a symbol for happiness.  The story goes if they come to your house and build a nest every year, they should bring happiness.  My mother’s natal home was just like that, which made my grandpa very happy.

この時期の七十二候の名称です。燕が南国に向けて帰っていく時期だという意味だそうです。燕は昔から、毎年家に来て巣を作ると縁起がいいとされていたようで、母の実家でも毎年燕の一家が春に来て秋に帰っていくので、祖父が喜んでいました。
