I don’t remember when I wrote these. I just found these three pieces that share the same motif and a very similar style. I am not sure what I intended to do with these pieces.

Thanks to all involved for their kind and sincere work on this exhibition, marking my seventieth birthday, which has now come to an end. At the moment, I feel very relieved, knowing I was able to show my great gratitude tangibly to my first calligraphy teacher and his wife who passed away about thirty years ago, and who guided me to this fantastic world of calligraphy; and my late parents who let me practice under this distinguished calligrapher for long.
Now, I am determined once again to try my best to share this long-established, amazing art and culture with the whole world.
Last but not least, my thanks go to the people of “art gallery HAKUHOU-DOH” who first proposed this event and worked so hard to make it successful.

知櫻の古希展は関わってくださったすべての皆さまのお陰さまにて、無事に終了いたしました。今のところは、この書という素晴らしい世界へと私を導いてくださり30年ほど前に亡くなった初めの師とその奥さま、またその名高い書家のもとに長く通わせてくれた今は亡い私の両親への感謝を形にすることが出来たことで安堵しております。

So far, I have been trying really hard to incorporate something new into my calligraphy; however, now I am determined to reevaluate writing four-character idioms on square sheets of thick paper in a classic way. I am certain that this approach will give the people looking at calligraphic works, especially those who enjoy seeing calligraphy a sense of reassurance, if you like.

The letter I wrote here is “hope” in ancient style. However, what I would like you to notice here is the quality of the paper, not the character written on it. I learned that this “grain” on the paper’s surface indicated the user’s rank in ancient times. This story is as attractive as the paper’s fabrication to me.

ここに書いた字は古い形の「望」ですが、字そのものよりもこの紙に施されたしぼの妙をご覧ください。昔はこのしぼを見ると、使い手の位が判ったそうです。私には、そういった話は紙の加工と同様に面白いです。

This four-character idiom apparently means a clear and calm mind, free from evil thoughts. At first, I practiced it on a long sheet of paper, and then I wrote it on a round sheet of paper. I had it framed. It is displayed at my exhibition. I hope you will visit the venue to see it.
