〜Zen word for the month of September　体露金風〜

I searched for a Zen phrase suitable for this month to serve as a motif for my calligraphic work.  I found this one, which apparently means everything appears as is, and a pleasant fall breeze.  This year, however, we haven’t had a chance to enjoy a refreshing breeze, even though it is already in the middle of the month.

〜Thunberg lily　稽古花〜

When I was younger and taking ikebana lessons, we often used Thunberg lilies as the material.  I heard it was because the florist who worked for our teacher thought he would be very sorry if the flowers for the lessons were pricey.  Are the flowers still affordable?

若かった頃、お花のお稽古していたときによくスカシユリが課題になっていました。先生のところにお花を届けるお花屋さんが、「稽古花があまり高いのは気の毒だから」と言っておられたからだそうです。今もスカシユリは高価な花ではないのでしょうか？

〜Spring haiku　ぼたん　釦　ボタン〜

As I found some old buttons in a drawer, I looked up a haiku about buttons and wrote it.  It is a springtime haiku, though.

〜Late father’s favorite　鰐梨〜

Just out of curiosity, I looked up the Chinese word for avocado that my late father loved.  And I found out it was written “alligator fruit.”  Incidentally, he loved to have it dipped in soy sauce seasoned with grated wasabi or Japanese horseradish.

〜Four-character idiom　鳶飛魚躍〜

I found this idiom very amusing and wrote it.  It says, “Kites fly in the sky freely and fish move vigorously in the river”.  In other words, it means all living things live freely and enjoyably, following their natural characteristics.  And it extends to suggest that the world is peaceful under good governance.  However, this term won’t suit humans on Earth

楽しそうな四字熟語だなと思って書きました。空では鳶が飛び回り、川では魚が踊っている。つまり、すべての生き物が自らの自然な性質に従って自由に楽しく生きるという意味で、更にそこから、良い統治のもとでは世界は平和であるという意味になるそうですが、地上の人間にはあまり当てはまらなそうです。

〜Drinking with friends　焼き鳥が好き〜

It seems the cool weather won’t arrive at once.  However, I think it would be nice if my friend(s) came by and said to me, “How would you like to drink saké with char-broiled chicken or something?”

〜Solar term　白露〜

Two weeks from a couple of days ago marks one of the solar terms called 白露, meaning “white dews on the plants.”  In other words, white dews appear on grass and trees at daybreak.

〜Bon Dance Festival　町内会の催し〜

Last weekend of last month, we had a bon dance festival as part of the neighborhood association activity.  It doesn’t have a long history.  It only began several years ago but I thought many more people took part in it quite suddenly this year thanks to the efforts by the key members of the association.

〜Large piece of paper　皆既月食〜

Since I heard the full moon that is rising this evening will be accompanied by a total eclipse very early tomorrow morning, I found and wrote an ancient Chinese poem titled “Lunar eclipse.”  I got tired after struggling with a large piece of paper for the first time in a while, though.
