〜Solar term　雷乃収声〜

This is the seasonal phrase or solar term for about five days starting today, which apparently means it is about the time thunders that begin around the vernal equinox will stop.  I found it very interesting that people in olden times believed thunder begins around the vernal equinox day and stops around the autumnal equinox day.

Because today marks the first day of the period of “higan”, which roughly is synonymous with “the afterlife”, I thought remembering ancestors would be something appropriate to do on this day.

〜Day for chrysanthemums　 新暦ではありますが〜

Although it is according to the new calendar, today marks the Double Ninth Festival, a day to celebrate the chrysanthemums I wrote a modern haiku on the flower.

The famous haiku poet, Takahama Kyoshi seems to be feeling kind of uneasy about the lacking petals.

Under the clear fall sky/

Noticed the lacking part of the petals/

Of a wild mum/

〜Solar terms 　大雨時行〜

This is the solar term for about five days starting today, which is literally, “Big rain occasionally falls”, and that means this is the time of year of hard summer rainfalls sometimes occur.

Overly hard rainfalls are never welcome.  However, now I would like some rains that could lower the temperature.

〜Chinese poem on the Moon　 新月は三日月〜

It may seem like this ancient Chinese poem is about the New Moon, however, obviously, “New Moon” means the very thin moon right after New Moon.

〜Fireflies are born 七十二候〜

The solar term for about five days from today is this, which means it is the time when fireflies come out of the grass and begin dancing with the flashing.  Apparently, in the old days, people believed fireflies are born out of decayed grass.  I am not sure if they were romantic or optimistic.
