〜Porridge haiku 　つまり残り物ですね〜

I looked up what kind of porridge you are supposed to eat on January 4th and found that plain white rice porridge with nothing added is for this.  So I cooked some—though it felt more like clearing out New Year’s leftovers.

What I find interesting about this haiku is that it features a double structure, where something truly familiar and close at hand, like porridge, coexists with the quietness of the universe.

O, the month of January/

Porridge and galaxy remain/

1月4日用のお粥としては何かあるかしらと調べてみたら、何も入らない白粥だと出てきましたので、作ってみましたが、つまりお正月の残り物整理かなという感じです。

この俳句は、お粥という極めて私的なものと、宇宙の静けさが同時に存在しているような構成となっているところが面白いと思いました。

I bought one at a small stand on the approach to the nearby shrine, crowded with people on their first visit.  My late mother used to love it.  All the children long time ago loved it, I wonder.

〜I love Cyndi! 　今年の締めくくりで成果〜

The most impressive event this year was Cyndi Lauper’s final concert in Osaka.  I felt both moved and happy to recall that I have always appreciated this female singer.  They say her name, Cyndi, means “lunar goddess” and “spirit of the Moon”, which led me to learn my first Japanese word, “月魄” with these meanings.

今年は4月にシンディローパーのコンサートに行き、「この人をずっと見てきて良かった」と感動しました。シンディという名前の語源の意味は「月の女神」「月の精」だそうですが、ここから「月魄」という日本語を初めて覚えました。

Here, “sitting” does not simply mean sitting down, but instead refers to the act of sitting in meditation.  It means sitting quietly alone in Zen meditation and facing your inner selves.
