This Zen phrase is believed to mean that you must always check yourself to keep a clean mind. In other words, if you fail to clean your room, it will get dirty. And similarly, if you don’t take good care of your spirit, it will eventually get dirty. I think, however, that is a tough thing to do.

When I was young, I used to learn the rules of behavior in the tea ceremony. My biggest delight in those days was having this special sweet called “hanabira mochi” or “flower petal rice cake” at the first tea ceremony of the year. It is a thin rice cake with a thin stick of burdock and sweet bean paste flavored with miso wrapped inside.
